Marc, I do see your point about letting doctors choose the people they have worked with before if they were impressed with them - this direct observational judgement is what is missing from the current system. But clearly this isn't fair to most people, who haven't had the same opportunities. It's quite random which firms you are assigned to anyway, and if you were working in a different area you will have had zero chance of impressing the doctors you apply to work under. Perhaps we just have to accept our random MTAS points system at the stage of Foundation School, where there is little to separate us on paper. The important stage is applying for specialty training programmes, after all, and that is where interviews and references and CVs should definitely play a role.

the biggest danger i wuld say is that peeple promote those most like themselves quite often.
i wish there was some appy medium between the randomness of allocation, to alleviate this, and the opportunity to wurk wif sumone you like and can wurk wif, which is jus as important.
seems to me, wherever i ave wurked in the past, if the wrong person got promoted or got a job, then it weasnt long before they were shown to be lacking, and usually everyone finds out and they soon feel like they dont want to be there."...reminds me of childhood memories,
