FAQ: What are the Top Medical Schools?

Question: What are the Top Medical School?

One of the first questions people ask when choosing a medical school is 'What are the Top Medical Schools?' or 'What are the Top Ten Medical Schools?'.

This question can be answered subjectively as discussed in the 'What are the Top 10 Premed Schools' or objectively by looking at a survey.

US News conducted a report into the top medical schools and came to the following conclusions:

Top Medical Schools for Primary Care:

1. University of Washington Medical School
2. University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill Medical School
3. Oregon Health and Science University
4. Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine
4. University of Massachusetts-Worcester Medical School
6. Duke University Medical School
6. University of Colorado - Denver and Health Sciences Center
6. University of Wisconsin - Madison
10 University of California - San Francisco Medical School

Top Medical Schools for Research:

1. Harvard University Medical School
2. Johns Hopkins University Medical School
3. University of Pennsylvania Medical School
4. University of California - San Francisco Medical School
4. Washington University in St. Louis Medical School
6. Duke University Medical School
7. Stanford University Medical School
7. University of Washington
9. Yale University Medical School
10 Baylor College of Medicine

Have your say:

Which medical schools do you think are top? Do you have your own personal top 10 medical schools?

What the **** is this?

You qualify from any medical school as a doctor, after that the medical school means bollocks to anyone.

You're right, its not about impressing prospective employers as it doesnt really matter but medical schools do teach at different standards and produce different standards in doctors. Thats why its important to try and figure out which are the most able.

Why? To who is that actually important and who will it effect; In the middle of the course? At the end of the course? Five years hence? Ten years hense?

But first you need to decide what makes a 'better' medical school and how you're going to measure it? Number of lectures? Number of exams? Reputation? Prestigious sounding clinical placements? Research that's so unrelated it won't make affect anyone for decades?

Given the GMC regulation and monitoring, I'd say that it has far more to do with the student than the school and the appropriate matching of the student to the school - unfortunaltely I have yet to meet an applicant that really appreciates this.

Interestingly, the last time (AIUI) the GMC rated the quality of junior doctors produced by school was in 2005 (the results of Tomorrows Doctors) the winner was quite suprising...

yey, i find this point is a difficult one to get across to a lot of the medics in ma year (mores the pity, becos i guess i was being a bit candid in 'oping the medics here would be smarter than the ones in which i worked previously).
and that point being? that ma med skool 'ere wont elp your career more than another just becos this med skool is perceived as a choice more worthy in the eyes of posh skoolers who are being persuaded to apply for such unis by their teachers for the purposes of the teacher's own benefit. pheww.
becos most of the peeple ere are posh skoolers, some of them tend to keep their posh skool views for at least a few years, and sadly, it stunts their finking.
i dont know why they adhere to these views for so long. if you just stop and chat to any staff around the med skool for a few daysthen it becomes obvious they are believing in a illusion - that posh top med skools give you a better chance in your career.
ONe theory of mine is that they stick to their views so long becos if they started discard them views and began tekking on board views of normal peeple then they would lose some of the motivation they ad for doing medicine in the first place - of wanting to be seen as top of the class, wanting to be seen as intelligent etc. which is pretty dumb, in ma view.

I was looking out for reputed colleges offering medical courses and I came across Antigua College of Medicine and Kasturba Medical College International Center. The 2 colleges are affiliated and they give an option of enrolling at either of the campuses and later the students have the opportunity to complete their clinical Sciences at United States teaching hospitals.

This college, Kasturba Medical College International Centre (KMCIC) seems to be quite a favorite among the aspiring medical students. I have done some research on this college as well. The admission procedure is quite simple here.
Unlike any other college in US where it takes about 7 to 8 years to finish all the semesters the course here stretches from four and a half to five years only. And after completion of the course you can appear for US Medical Exams.
The college is affiliated from AUA and AUA is approved by the Government of Antigua and Barbuda. AUA is also listed by the Education Commission of Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) as an approved school and that AUA students are permitted to sit for the United States Medical Licensing Examinations (USMLE).

And for any further information you can log on to:
