ok so here it is: planning on applying to do medicine in 2011... i'm a final year biomedical science student predicted a 2:1.. did a year long placement at a hospital working with pharmacists. Other work experience has been in another hospital's haematology lab (is lab work considered relevant work experience?????).
my a-levels are quite poor so before my BSc, i did a foundation degree in biological science. (will they overlook my a levels as i have a foundation degree???)
what are my chances of getting into graduate medicine????????
also am i better off applying for the 5year courses????
HELP..please!

Your work experience sounds great, maybe you could try and get some voluntary work in this year to strengthen it even more?
As for the A-levels/foundation degree- just email the admissions departments of the places you are considering applying to and see what they say! Most are very helpful and the worst they can say is 'no, we won't accept you!' in which case look elsewhere! I'm sure it will be fine though
As for graduate/5yr programmes- 5yrs are definitely easier to get on to but it just depends on your financial situation really- you'd have to find 3k+ for the first 4yrs of a 5yr degree for the tuition fees. (There are loans etc available though banks though). In graduate courses the NHS fund the final three years.
Hope that helps! Good luck!

Stupid question I think, but how can you guys know where you want to apply to without doing the UKCAT? I mean... it's probably quite noble to pick Uni's you like and stick with those choices regardless of your score, but at the end of the day, will you not pick Uni's that are more suited to your UKCAT? i.e. if you don't get 700 or more it is unlikely you'll get an interview for Kings GEP so it would probably be a waste of a place?
Not trying to criticise or anything, just wondering if they're more 'preliminary' choices rather than definites?

Hi, yep i totally agree with you!
My Birmingham and UCL choices are definite as neither of them want the UKCAT..
Warwick & Kings are not- they are just my choices based on getting the UKCAT score i want- i.e. over 700!! If I don't get that i'll have a rethink as to where I should apply.

Hi all, Liam here, applying for GEP medicine programmes in 2011. I'm through the planning phase and into the preparation phase, having worked out who'll take me with my 2.1 in Philosophy and English and assorted nursing experience (but not wanting to move to the other end of the country to train!).
Any other arts grads or nurses care to share?
