Personal Statements and UCAS forms

I have applied for medical school this year. I have some references and other material that may support my application. I was wondering how i can go about sending these to the different universities?

Call up admissions, ask if they want the extra stuff. If yes, put the papers in a large and secure jiffy bag and send it to admissions or the medical school office I'm guessing.

would i need a covering lettter with that?

Probably, it's polite to explain what's included. Makes it harder to lose everything as well.
