'A laughable application'?
The very phrase my head of sixth form used to describe my hopes for medicine...
But is it really? I asked for a private meeting with the aforementioned demonic teacher to discuss my A2 predictions, a fairly given AAC, specifically to ask about whether my prediction of a C in biology could be raised to a B, given that I now have a personal tutor in both biology and chemistry and am intending resits in the January session.
As well as instantly refusing to change my predicted grade he followed it with a series of comments such as the title phrase, given that I've come this far and never considered anything apart from Medicine, I wasn't exactly likely to instantly agree with him and forget about applying, after all no one is going to give up their dream career on the basis of a few nasty words right?
My question to you all is a tired and recycled 'do I have a chance' with a slight twist...any advice on how to prove that I need the grade changing, because it's the only thing that is holding me back...My biology teacher and head of careers have both said that, aside from standing a good chance of improving my AS biology and chemistry grades my personal statement reads very well compared to some of the other 20 applicants from my college.
I appreciate there are a few hundred of these threads kicking about so anyone taking the time out to give me any advice would be doing me a real favour...If you need any academic information aside from that in my signature just ask
Harry

I'd apply anyway if I were you. If you get an interview, great - you then have a chance of getting an offer, and if you still get rejected, then it's a great experience for a reapplication.
If you then get four rejections, and you manage to get AAB, reapply! You'd then stand a solid chance as your GCSEs are great. If you constructed a good PS and got a decent UKCAT score, then there's no reason you wouldn't get interviews/offers.
Might be worth getting your parents involved with this malarky... Just a thought.

Hi Harry,
That sounds really frustrating. I have to agree with the post above. You should go for it and if you are not successful, you can prove your teachers wrong and get the AAB and then reapply next year.
Out of curiousity, how were your AS marks that they will not predict the B in Biology?

Hey guys, thanks for your speedy replies.
My biology module results were a D in the first foundation module, which I should have resat in summer to be honest, a B in human health and disease and a C in the transport module which consisted of a written paper and a practical test, the written part of which I got a B and the practical I managed a D, thanks to my obviously excellent hand eye coordination skills :P
Kinkerz, I think you might be right in getting my parents involved, I'd just hoped to get my application off as quick as possible and obviously getting a meeting with the head of sixth form will take time that we all dont necessarily have, so I should get the ball rolling on that front I think...

You come off as a reasonable young man who knows what he wants to do and in my opinion that counts for more than gajillion A's.
Your AS results are reasonable and to be honest your teacher doesn't know what he's talking about. Academic requirements are not the end all and be all. TBH, most of these teachers base their information on heresay, like my chem teacher for example. He thought that if you didn't get all A's in AS level you wouldn't get an interview for med. But little did he know that my friend last year got 4B's in AS and ended up with at least three interviews(one at UCL and one at Cambridge).
So don't fret, your application is as good as any. People delude themselves into thinking that everyone who applies have gotten straight A's/ Have super awesome BMAT/UKCAT scores/ have uber awesome extra curriculars etc...
This is not the case. Keep your chin up, involve your parents and get that damn AAB prediction!

I second this! Case in point - my best friend got accepted to Kings with AAC in her A-levels and my bro is about to graduate in the top quarter of his year from Newcastle having only just scraped an A in geography and none of his requisite grades (he got ABBB). Sometimes you've just gotta go out on a limb and apply. If not, you'll be prepared to go it again next year. I think, infact getting rejected last year was the best thing for me because it made me work really hard in my Biology (mature person here, did AS and A in a year at evening school) because I then *needed* the A and couldn't rely on the 'oh if I get a B they'll let me in anyway' hope!

Try and get the prediction. At this point you have nothing to lose, so get your parents involved. Good luck.

If he's in fifth year then probably not - I'm crap at putting names on faces, anything beyond my year I'm even more lost. Haha sorry!
