When is the best time to start writing Personal Statements?
I'm in year 12 but is it advisable to write a draft now and then come back to it later in the academic year when I get my UCAS form?

Definitely! Without a doubt, what I done was write out a list of things I could achieve and realte to medicine, Duke of Ed, Volunatry work, Work experience etc. etc. Then I went out and did it! I kept redrafting my PS over and over and it was ready from the 1st September and managed to get it sent on the 22nd September. I'm very very happy with my PS and Im reassured now I have an interview at Manc

Oh forgot to mention, look at the guidelines from the uni you want to apply to. I used Manchesters religiously!

I'd agree. I didn't start my personal statement until the beginning of summer but I would advise that you start it as soon as possible (or as soon as you're motivated!) You'll go through at least 3 initial drafts (I had about 4 different introductions which were all terrible in their own special little ways) and it's just so much better if you can get it out of the way.
This is particularly so if your school's anything like mine. They wouldn't write my reference until I'd given my statement in, and even after that they were still really slow. If you just shove your PS under their noses on the first day of term (or even before you break up for summer) they'll have no excuse to faff about.
Even if you're not applying to Manchester, use their guidelines! They're really thorough and useful and give you a great idea of things you need to include. I've got quite an early interview for Birmingham so I guess mine and Smyth's are vague proof that it helps!xxx Gem xxx

Hell yeah.
My head of year had the BALLS to tell the entire year group that 'Cardiff are really quick with offers' to which I emitted a snort...
Wouldn't call leaving everyone til April quick!

I'd agree, start drafting now, and if you find you have anything missing experience wise, you'd have enough time to go and sort it out! I didn't actually use the Manchester guidelines (oops) but have got an interview from them; however I'd definitely recommend using them. You could also ask people at open days what they're looking for from a PS (not that I thought to do that at the time
