I definitely need to brush up on recording info on charts/forms etc. Do they ask us to do that for every station? Just one or two, randomly?

Hmm, all of a sudden I feel like it's June or something, time goes so fast it feels like the pressure is on already! At the end of year 2/beginning of year 3 do they give you much of a clue as to what to expect in year 3?

Its just one or two stations....well at the beginning of year 3 they scare the S*** out of you with the year structure and the first few weeks you will not really know what your doing but a month in and you will find it easy

You can always try and grab some of the 5th years to do some ISCE practice with you - I'll even do some myself if you can get a group together!

Ah I wish you were in Exeter! Trying to organise a mock ISCE (CSRC refused) and thinking of getting 5th years/F1s to assess.

Hey Nadia I'm going to organise a mock isce too, but just casually with 2 other guys, do you mean CSRC refused to organise one for all students?

Oh and iceman, any tips for memorising the mini mental state exam? It's huge!

    Mental state exams -
All *insert friend's name beginning with B*'s Slags Must Take Precautions for Chlamydia Infection...

Best thing to do to memorise the 30 point MMSE is to break it down into sections - learn the order of these then it becomes a series of small lists instead of one massive one. Job done.

    Orientation (10) - 5 points time, 5 points place
    Registration (3) - repeat 3 objects
Concentration (5) - serial 7s, if they can't do maths then use WORLD backwards
    Recall (3) - remember the 3 objects
Everything else (9) - Name two objects (2), say 'no ifs ands or buts' (1), obey 3 stage command (3) "with the index finger of your right hand, touch your nose then your left ear", obey written command (1) "close your eyes", write a sentence (1), copy intersecting pentagons (1)

I tend to find orientation, registration, concentration and recall flow nicely, I have to think a bit when I get to the 'everything else' section but again just try to group those, and practise running through it lots so you get the patter.

When it comes down to it you're effectively just learning it for the ISCE - in the hospital it's all written down for you to go through and whenever you accidentally wander onto an Elderly Care ward you find yourself instantly accosted by however many F1s wanting to offload their MMSE sheets onto you to get on with...

But don't worry. Just learn the mnemonic for the MSE, then for the MMSE break down the 30 points into categories so you've got less things to learn...then just practise, lots!
2nd year ISCE is fine so long as you prepare enough for it...spare a thought for us whining fourth years hehe.

Its annoying how we are forced to learn it, even though its easy im still annyed that its printed on cards for people to just read off of.

Yeah, it's pointless memorisation really, but oh well, I'm almost there with it.
