Teaching style and night life ??

I just wanted to clear up a few things with the teaching style. I've heard that it's a pbl course, but I was wondering how much support do you get ? What is the average week like for a PMS student ?

And what is the the night life like at the Exeter campus ?

    Cheers

    Hey,
It's been a while since I did pre-clinicals but if its the same then in an average week you have a few lectures (we call them plenaries), 3 pbl sessions a fortnight with your small group which you do get support with, a day of life science (where you prepare for sessions from a study guide in advance and then have a teaching/revision session in a group with a tutor). You also have clinical skills where you practice the practical side of things and communication skills with 'simulated patients' (actors), go on the odd gp placement, attend 'jigsaw' group sessions which is a bit like group therapy in my eyes lol, you just chat about whats on your mind in terms of what you've experienced throughout the course, ethical issues etc.
Thats about as much as I can remember....
As for the night life, I did my first 2 years in Plymouth and wouldn't have had it any other way. I think Plymouth is a much younger city and a much better place for a night out if you ask me

    The girl has it right

    In a normal fortnight

3 x 2hr PBL - The main core of the course, make learning objectives to study over the fortnight.

2 x 2hr Clinical Skills - 1/2 communication skills with actors, 1/2 more clinical skills. In the first term, venepuncture, musculoskeletal examinations, injection technique etc.

1 x 2hr community placement - Could be with a GP, school for learning disabilities, chiropractor etc.

1 x 2hr jigsaw - Talk about placement, ethics of medicine etc.

2 x 3hr Life Sciences - The main teaching time, mainly anatomy, physiology at the moment.

7 x 1hr plenaries - Lectures from local doctors mostly on their specialities

1 x 2hr Evidence based practice - Statistics, learning about and conducting studies.

    Think that covers it all

Nightlife in Exeter? It's not bad, but it's not particularly good either. I've heard, like Emma said, that Plymouth is a better city for nightlife, but I think Exeter is a nicer city during the day. We have 5 main nightclubs - Lemmy, Timepiece, Mosaic, Rococo's and Arena. there's themed nights arranged 2 / 3 times a week, good student nights with good drink deals most days (except weekends). We have fun anyway

Don't hesitate to ask anymore questions if anything comes to mind

    In addition,

Yes, it's a PBL course. As a student, they expect you to do approx 14hrs of self-directed learning outside the main course, although to be quite honest not many people do that amount in the first year.

There is however, plenty of support available, teachers available during Life science sessions to answer any questions or forward you in the right direction. You can also book in for clinical skills self-directed learning with a teacher if you need extra help.

SHUAI PANG HOU!! Fancy seeing you here!!

Anyway, personally I quite like PBL because I'm involved with my own learning instead of falling asleep at lectures. However, self-directed learning is a pain. As philpott said, there is a lot of support, but it also takes a lot of discipline to actually use it.

coming from a city on an island, the nightlife is shit.
okay not really, you can have a great night with the right company and a shit night in a place with great nightlife. exeter so far is pretty froody.

I was wondering, when staying in university accomodation such as Rowancroft are students allowed friends or family to stay with them for one night?
