    Forensic Pathology

It has to be the goriest, most stomach turning branch of Medicine, but to me it's the most fascinating subject ever.
I'm about to do a degree in Forensic Science, after which I would like to study Medicine and train to become a Forensic Pathologist.
Is there anybody else who wants to be a Forensic Pathologist?

This was the avenue that originally led me into a desire to study medicine. From the first rat I ever dissected to the first time I saw a dead body (I didn't do it guvner honest) I have always been fascinated by how it all works and wanted to 'get in there' and find it all out for myself.

Strangely though since pursuing the 'med school dream' I have found a bizarre liking for live people as well, and have since considered many other specialties... I still think pathology has a lot going for it though, it's one career where you definitely can't kill the patients

I must admit I will probably try to avoid mentioning this interest at interview... I can imagine the response, why not live people, etc...

I may well be picking your brains soon then itsumo (not literally as this thread may suggest...) I hope to be brave enough to bring up this interest at interview (assuming I get any interviews!) after I apply this year. I'll keep you in mind if I get stuck finding things out about it first, thanks!

hi - im an aspiring forensic pathologist too, i just graduated in microbiology and infection. i didnt get into med school for 2006 entry, boo hiss. but have been lucky enough to land a job at the edinburgh forensic medicine unit as a research 'person'. am re-applying to medicine again this year, up to my a** in UCAS forms and constantly fretting about personal statements and interviews (if i ever get one).

on the whole 'should i, shouldnt i big up the forensic interest'...ive had complete mixed reviews.

    its a nightmare!

nice to know im not alone though...

Yeah, I'm thinking I'd like to go down that route. Just doing an access to higher education course at the moment but, hoping to go on and do something like forensic science after in Leeds or York?

I did my GCSE work experience at the local hospital which involved spending time in the mortuary. I really enjoyed it and found that I had the stomach for most things (although the smell of one man in particular was a little strong).

Good luck with your course and I hope to be joining you on that route soon
    PhD in Biological Sciences - Hull, 2010 - 2013
    BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science - Hull, 2007 - 2010

Unsuccessful for 2010 entry. Reapplying for 2013! Considering HYMS (5 year) and Newcastle, Warwick, Nottingham and Birmingam (4 year)?

It's not about where you're going, it's about how you get there

Yeah, I first got the medicine bug wanting to be a pathologist, I remember telling people when I was about 10 that I wanted to be a pathologist and being asked why not a nurse!! ha ha

Have recently thought about other things, but since getting into med school my geekiness is getting out of hand and all branches of path seem really interesting! Oh dear I think I'm destined to a life at the microscope!

I'm not so sure I want to go into pathology anymore. After four weeks of Forensic Science, I've become slightly put-off by what I've had to see and read about on my course. It's got to me, emotionally. The squeemishness I can deal with, but I just don't think I have the emotional strength to deal with victims of violent crime, accidents etc. The subject still engages my interest academically, but I think I shall look into other areas of medicine when the time comes to think about a medical career.

Pathology is on my list of possibilities but I think I would rather specialise in microbiology/virology/bacteriology than forensic pathology. I find the whole thing really very interesting. I have applied to do three weeks of my elective in anatomical pathology so hopefully I will get to do that
