    Pathology Careers

I am an A-Level student studying Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Product Design. Right now I am in my first year and don't know what to study at university, so I am information hunting on the courses I am interested in following. One is Pathology, are the subjects I am studying enough to get me a place studying Pathology at University or Med School? What grades should I be after? And any other helpful information you wish to add.

Sorry about all the questions. ops:

    Cheers!

to become a pathologist, you will have to first qualify as a doctor, and then specialise as a pathologist. The subjects you have taken are fine. Grades are a minimum of ABB to AAA depending on where you apply. I suggest you look on a few medschool websites to get a better idea of what you will need. GCSE grades are also relevant, as many specify B or higher in Eng, Maths, and some want at least 6 or 7 A's.

While others only ask for five C's at GCSE... (along with the A levels of course )

But don't say that you want to be a pathologist on your UCAS form or at interview - they are very keen on people being undecided at your stage and making up your minds later. By the way pathology is a great career choice inside of medicine, there is quick promotion, 9-5 hours, it is family friendly and there is little competition.

I spent the day with a pathologist and he told me that he earns an 'obscene' amount of money. He also said that the money the coroner owed him, for 6 months work, kept his daughter at university for a year.
I believe (correct me if I am wrong) but additional to the pathologist's salary, they are paid money from the coroner for each suspicious/unexplained body they conduct a PM on, but no extras for natural/expected deaths.... or something like that, anyway.

You mean so long as the price is right? That's dedication.

By the way, doctors also get extra money for certifying deaths. My finacee regularly gets cheques for doing this. It's really sad because all the deceased patients' names are listed on the envelope that the cheque comes in. Sort of making you feel that it's dirty money.

Ash cash, if they're cremated. It used to be very easy to "forget" to declare this on your tax return....
