    the guilt thing

    Hello

Are there any mummies or daddies applying ? Thought it would be nice to get some discussion going about things like child care arrangements and school holidays etc. Is it just me or are there others feeling a bit guilty about applying to med school with little ones ?

In my first year of a GPEP at Kings and I'm feeling like the worst mum ever. My older daughter crawled into my bed a few days ago asking me if I really did have to go to doctor school anymore and could I stop going and play with her instead (I was a stay at home mum for five yrs before doing this)... Feel like my family are making all the sacrifices and I'm having the fun (except it isn't much fun).

Despite all of that I am sure I'm doing the right thing but, for me at least, it feels quite selfish as their lives would be a lot happier if I was doing something else.

Childcare is a mare too (have a rather inconsistent live-out au pair)

The guilt is terrible. I'm a 2nd year (with a 6 yr old and 3 yr old) and feel guilty all the time. But i have to say i think it has done some good for my 6 year old. She was really clingy before and would cry if i just wanted to go sainsburys without her. But now i am at med school she tells me she loves me loads and gives me loads of cuddles but doesn't mind me going out! It's great. The kids seem to have accepted that i have to go to school like they have to go to school - part of life. Go for it - the kids adjust better than we give them credit for.

Yep, they definitely pay more attention to me now I'm not around as much, which is lovely. And agree with the others that they make the adjustment really quickly (almost too quickly!). You do just get caught out on the days when you think it's all going really well and then suddenly it isn't and you don't have time to pick up the pieces, so you just have to dust them off and ask them to be brave. I'm the only mum on my course which is a shame as it would have been nice to have someone to discuss this all with, without sounding like the boring mum who's always complaining about childcare!

    Hello everyone
Good to hear from you and it is helpful to hear how others deal with the guilt issue. I guess it's something that will alway be there and we'll just have to do the best we can. I do agree kids are alot more adaptable than we sometimes give them credit for.
Pookymum-I can imagine it must be a bit tough not having another parent in your year, are there some in the other years you can talk to ??
Gizmo-I saw bits of Hostel, it's horrendous I couldn't sleep !! What has it got to do with kids ? (maybe I missed a bit ??)

    Best Wishes

I am worried about child care,if I get in to Warwick hubby will be working in London so I am going to be a single mum practically speaking. I've never had an au pair but I think i am going to have to look into this option. I am trying not to worry about it too much until there is a reason for me to be worried i.e I get a place !
Can anyone say how sympathetic tutors are with missing the occasional lecture or leaving early etc ?
