Sigh.
I'm a mum at med school with three kids and you know what ? I am really really REALLY tired. Deeply deeply tired, from 11 years (eldest) of parental duties. It doesn't help when the 18 yr old students relish in their "lie ins" when lectures are cancelled or start a bit later. Don't get me wrong being a parent is the best and most important and wonderful thing in my life but I thought you might understand and I wanted to have a little moan and groan.
Why do I do this to myself ?

Why? Because you had the strength of mind and self-belief to dare to do it in the first place, and to do it and make it work, and become what you wanted to become. Life doesn't get any better than that to be honest....even if you are tired....as a dad of 1, you have my undying understanding.

How's it going?
I know exactly how you feel. I dream about sleep, more sleep, more sleep, and crave my duvet at the most inappropriate times (eg lectures!!!) If anyone could give me any present at all in the world, it would be 48 hours to myself, no work, no kids (love em to bits)....There's no getting away from parenting being completely knackering so why do we add on a difficult degree as well?
I'm now half way through the year, and guess what, it's now starting to get light before I leave the house...roll on spring!
My cup of tea is raised .....
Here's to parent doctors-to-be - we'll get there, with the t-shirt (slightly grey from the mis-sorted washing) and the smile (we managed to rebuild the lipstick after the toddler used it to write on the floor) and the polished shoes (managed to wipe off the sick) with the 'I love you Mummy - your so speshal' note tucked in the pockets of our white coats.

summerbreeze you are doing so well! There will be times when you feel so tired and then other times when you think, I can actually do this and enjoy it and not be exhausted. I know I have a baby and have finals this year and it can be really lonely when you feel that tired. Anyway I hope you are feeling a little better and have managed a few early nights, and take the pressure off when you have to. I got told the only people who dont pass med school are the ones who have spent most of it in bed- and thats certainly not you!

Brave! I know a couple of undergrads who've had babies at uni, and it's actually been fab - so nice to have them around and we all look after them while their mums are in tutorials. But it's rare here.
My parents had me when they were both JHOs. They did one night in three on call each, and still say the worst nights were when they were both at home arguing over who fed me
Although things aren't so crazy now, I don't think there's ever an "easy" time to have kids in this profession - not sure I'd want it any other way though.
I have to say that I agree with Nick - being a mum and a medical student is an amazing achievement, and one I wouldn't want to even attempt (I think I'll be having my kids when I can pay for childcare and my other half's in the same city!). You're amazing, brave people and I really admire your energy!
