I have no plans to have children for a long time yet, but lots of my friends at uni want to have children. It's quite common. One of my friends got married recently and wants to start a family soon.ANYTHING WRITTEN BY ME ON THIS SITE DOES NOT REPRESENT THE VIEWS OF SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY!
Finally a final year medical student!

22-01-2007, 12:07 AM #17I got older! I'm 23 this year....if i was starting med school now and was married/in a relationship in which having children was a big possibility then i can kinda see why people would want to do it now. I definetely wouldn't do it during F1/2.

its not that people plan to have babies whilst at med school- it really wouldnt be ideal- its more that there really isnt an ideal time once you start your career as a doctor- from the start theres 5yrs at uni-no convenient time- then fy training- definately no time!- then speciality training 3-7yrs-still no time! so really my question was, when does my son get a brother or sister if my life is on hold for 10 yrs+? im 26 now.... dont fancy having babies at 36!! kinda hoped it would all be over by then, its just when do i fit it in???!!!
but i quite agree it is mad to have kids at med school, but sometimes you have to be a bit unwise in life, and people have proved it can be done its all about priorities. Balancing career and family is never easy.
Plus, at 26 i wont be partying as much as you young uns' anyways! i did that years ago so my priorities are different from many other students. This thread was just to mention the unmentionable- that other things are important in life as well as becoming a doctor, dont get me wrong i am commited to becoming a doctor, i just have other commitments i need to consider too!
But, like i said earlier, im putting it out of my mind until im actually a med student! getting in comes first, then surviving the first years!
first things first eh?

Its probably better to have one before F1/F2. My main worry is the long hours you dont want to miss out on your child growing up. I dont think the medical professional is very family friendly but thats a sacrafice you must make I guess
