Mature Students

From you guys who are there, what percentage of Medical Students at Oxford are mature students? I live locally and don't want to uproot my whole family just because of my dreams. I'm just trying to work out my chances...not that I'm going to apply until 2009.

I'm not sure how reliable this is, but according to "the insiders' guide to UK medical schools" 2005/2006 edition, mature students make up 0-4% -apparently the lowest of all the medical schools... I don't see why that should put you off though. Surely they would judge you on your credentials not your age?

Im thinking of applying here as ive always really wanted to go here, but as mature student do you have to apply to certain graduate colleges or can you apply to any?

i think that would depend on whether you want to do the 6 year or the graduate entry programme. When I get round to it I think I'll just do an open application that way you are more likely to get considered for all colleges incase your first choice is full. I think thats how it works. Want to go to Oriel though ideally

there are 30 on the graduate entry 4 year course, and mature students are not accepted on the 6yr AFAIK. about 150 on normal undergrad course, isn't it? that gives 30/180 = 17% mature.

Mature students are accepted on the 6yr course... I can think of 3 in my year, one at my college and there may be one or two more. However they will all skip the 3rd year and go onto the clinical school.

I know of 2 on our course at the moment- as they have done a degree before, they don't do the science degree we do in Year 3 (and Trinity of year 2). Instead, they do a clinical anatomy course.

but are any new mature students accepted on the undergraduate course? The rules may have changed in the last few years.

Isn't Green college a graduate college? It's also highly focused on the biomedical side of things, with lots and lots of clinical meddies.

I know of one "new" mature student in my year who will be doing the third science year with us. Admittedly the proportion is not high, but as elles has provided above, the medschool will consider you.
