Calling all who have got in to Oxford Medical School
From when i was a little girl, my dream has been to do Medicine in Oxford. However, my dream has been crushed by a teacher from Sixth Form Mangement, just because he doesn't think that Oxbridge is a good place to do Medicine, they don't have the facilities according to him. I had the "I want to go to Oxford" talk with him many times and he had been trying to persuade not to even bother applying, since it is 25% of my application and that it is a waste. Then he said that the only reason i want to go there is because I'm Asian and my parents are telling me to apply. Then because i got a B grade in my mock chemistry he said that he does not think that i am capable of even applying to Oxford and that if i do that the school will not support my application. i know for a fact that this is not true and it is just this teacher that does not llike me. So i am just wondering what type of people have got into Oxford to do Medicine. i realise that there is no "Oxford type" - but i need to know whether I should even bother applying after getting so badly discouraged by this teacher.
i got 5A*'s and 5A's last year. i am doing Maths, Biology, Chemistry and DT A-levels and am getting A's and B's in tests.
i have an extensive list of extra-curriculars as well as voluntary work.
Someone please help me!
PS - sorry for the lack of paragraphing!!

Medicine is really competitive any where you apply, so its not really a waste of an application applying to Oxford. There are many people in my school who were capable of going to oxbridge for medicine but didn't apply (for fear of wasting a place), and some of them haven't been given any offers. Its important to apply to the school where you would want to spend 5/6 years studying (plus extra after that). As for lack of facilities; have you seen the medical sciences building in oxford?!?
There is a lot scepticism about lack of clinical contact initially, however many schools that boast early clinical contact only give you a week in your first year. I think there is limited initial contact at Oxford, although the prospectus says something about GP sessions in the first couple of years.
For my A-levels, I am doing Chem, Physics, biology and Maths. I got 9A*s and 2As @ GCSE. I have an offer of AAA to Corpus Christi, and I want to be a hands on doctor.
Hope that helps?!

I would just apply if you really wanted. your gcse's seem fine to me. as long as u can convince ur teachers to predict 3 a's for u, then there really shouldn't be a problem.
as far as facilities of the course are concerned, i don't see how we're worse off than any other med school. the medical sciences building is very new and modern and they're going to build a new biochemistry building sometime soon. the college system also allows for better monitoring of students' progress and feedback of the course. the only problem with the course is that there is hardly any clinical contact but that is more than compensated for by the clinical course, if you stay on for that.

If this is the standard of advice your sixth form head is giving, I think there's definitely grounds for a complaint, particularly on the grounds of this gem:
Then he said that the only reason i want to go there is because I'm Asian and my parents are telling me to apply.

That's terrible; he should never have said that and it's completely incorrect. As an Asian whose parents have never pressured me to apply to Oxford; I say screw him and apply. You have as good a chance as anybody; and if this is your dream and not your parents', go for it!

It looks like you have had plenty of advice; I just wanted to add a few points.
The best advice I can give you is to go to open days of as many medical school as poosible, prioritising those you are interrested in. The mistake I did was to apply to Unis I had never visisted. I ended up not liking any of them except Oxford.
You should choose a Uni that you believe you will enjoy both accademically and socially (5/6 years is a longtime). By the way the college system in Oxford may create some sort of small close-knit community which some people may not particularly enjoy (like Alice)
The prestige of Oxford uni does not matter in the medical profession in England but it does internationally.
I believe that you obviously know about the BMAT test.
Finally tell your teacher that he/she is a segragationist, race-conscious ignorant...... how many contact does he/she got in Oxford to assert his/her opinion as a fact???????
PS: you got to be grammatically "perfect" because there are a lot of pedantics there - judging from this forum.....lol... (this is a joke.... - not that funny??? well....)Last edited by k7; 10-04-2005 at 05:03 PM.

Yesterday when I was babysitting I started reading Eats, Shoots and Leaves and was deeply amused though also worried to discover just how pedantic I truly was (I got all excited at the idea of the 'Apostrophe Protection Club' and of founding a militaristic section armed with tippex and ladders - to change every sign in the UK so it's grammatically correct
