Medical aspects
Anyone done much work in orthopaedics?
Is there the opportunity for much non-surgical work e.g. following up patients in clinic, dealing with rheumatological aspects of their orthopaedic problems etc?
Or...is it just pure carpentry??Durham 2007

There are clinics. Patients need to be seen pre and post op. There is also fracture clinic. However I have never heard of anyone just doing clinics. Each surgeaon follows up their own patients within the firm (usually boss is in theatre and his juniors in the clinics).
Orthopeadic patients often have a lot of medical problems (all those little old ladies with broken hips on 100 of tablets that made them fall in first place) but from my experience management of those usually falls on junior doctors as consultants are not particulary interested.
Rheumatology is a separete speciality and patient with this sort of problems are refered on for this part of their care. If clinics are more your kind of thing then maybe you should look into rheumatology, it is nothing but clinics, clinics and more clinics.Last edited by belis; 05-09-2008 at 05:14 PM.
