Need your OBS/GYN Advice guys!!!!

Hey guys

I'm currently in Year 2 med at the moment. I have a strong interest in obs and gynae but haven't had much exposure to it.
Just wondering what you guys have done to get exposure, etc and how I can show commitment to the specialty.

We don't do obs and gynae till year 4 at my med school so I have limited knowledge. Will this be a hinderence in trying to get exposure/ show commitment to the specialty?

A friend and I went to this last year (when we were in the same position as you): RCOG Careers Fair | Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists

If it's the same as last time, it was a morning of careers advice and talks around Obs and Gynae from doctors currently in the speciality. It was followed by a 'taster' afternoon - lots of skills demos and a chance to try a few things with models (e.g. ultrasound, episetomy suturing, chance to interact with a model simulating labour etc).

A mixture of students and foundation doctors were there, so it was more focused on careers guidance than 'exposure' per se, but they did email us a certificate of attendance afterwards, which I think would help demonstrate committment to the speciality.

I've also chosen a gynaecologically orientated SSM for my fourth year.

I'm not sure that only having fourth year experience will be that much of a hinderance. One of the registrars at the open day said that you can usually find an obs and gynae 'angle' in the experiences you have in your foundation years. I found the RCOG day was helpful in terms of thinking a bit more about whether it was something I wanted to do though, and I'm hoping the same will be true of the SSM.
