work experience
I know what you learnt from your work expereince is important. But purely in terms of numbers is the below enough work experience for Notts?
- 13 months care home
- 2 days shadow pathologist
- 5 clinics GP shadowing
Other experiences
- In Sept I will be doing a 3 days experience in a NHS hospital - rheumatology/pathology/hematology/various
- Do lots of little things for amnesty international on an informal basis
- Will be working with Stonewall as a youth anti bullying mentor
- I'll be signing up with St Johns ambulance soon but this could take a while so will prob only have a few months with them.
As I'm applying for 2011 entry I feel I still have time to do much more. Is there anything else anybody would advise? Also is it worthwhile doing exprience in the Notts hospitals as if I get accepted I'll potentially be working with people there? Or is that going to come across a little desperate? lol
I forgot to mention I work full time hence why so little experience. I hope they take that into consideration.

Hi,
That looks like plenty of work experience to me, the only work experience I had done was 2 weeks in a hospital in year 10 at school and another week in 6th form!! The main thing that they're looking for is that you have an understanding of the role of a doctor and the environment that you'll be working in. I think its unnecessary for you to do some in Nottingham, you'll get plenty of that when your on the course! They love stuff like care homes as it shows a longer term commitment rather than going into hospital for a week, watching a couple of operations and sitting in the mess drinking coffee!
Good luck!

Speaking from a GEM perspective I think you need a minimum of about 6-12 months work experience, as this i key to displaying a 'commitment to medicine as a career'. But probably the most important part about this experience is reflecting on it and thinking about what you have learnt about yourself and what it means to be a Doctor, because it's those sorts of question you'll get at interview.

Nottingham is one of the few med schools (for the 5 years course) that doesn't require work experience. I have friends in my year who did none! They appreciate that when you're 17/18 people aren't that keen on taking you on. Nottingham is very keen on volunteering rather than work experience! The fact you have done some is more than enough so no need to worry :-)
