Another about accommodation advice
Hello all,
I will be starting as a Derby GEM student this September. I currently work in Cairo and will not be back in the UK until mid-August.
I was hoping for some advice regarding accommodation (forgive me if some of these have been covered before) so that i have an idea of what i will be facing when i get back to look for a place to live!
What are the best/most popular areas to live in as a GEM student?
I may be looking into renting a 1-bed flat, and probably need to get a few things lined up for viewing before coming up to Derby, so would like to have an idea of where i should be looking.
Can anyone recommend any good, efficient estate agents? And any ideas of price ranges?
Alternatively, i am also interested in sharing with another person. If there is anyone else wont be looking till mid August and who fancies looking for a place together, or has a room freeing up in August, let me know.
I am female 25 yr-old, and am clean and tidy, and come complete with blender, coffee maker and all sorts of other goodies!
Thanks in advance

Hi Hippocratic touch,
-I am also considering renting a 2-bed and finding someone to take the 2nd room once i have found a place, as i am guessing it should be easy enough to find someone to fill a space. (unless people think otherwise?)
I am quite keen to share with a GEM though, for obvious reasons, so if you feel you might be interested then watch this space!
You said you had already looked at some flats- any ideas on what areas are the most appropriate to be looking in?

hey, sorry it took a while for me to reply i've been away for a while. But to respond to the issues you raised, in no particular order, i'd say the best houses to get, in my opinion are those close to the school. I am also looking to share with a GEM, so let me know if something comes up.

Hello Briefcase,
I dont think you have left it stupidly late at all! I will be looking for somewhere probably round mid-August time myself, and i know of other people who have not started looking yet, so i wouldnt worry too much.
It should not be too hard to find a place, i think- there seem to be lots of rooms going and also seems easy enough to find places to rent quickly (from what i have seen so far).
Seems silly to start renting/ looking for somewhere now if you are not planning on being there till Sept.
I myself always feel a bit panicked that i am leaving things 'too late', but then you have to take a breath and think about it logically- you will have no problems finding somewhere; so dont fret!

Hi folks,
Am going to rent a house in derby but all the rental agencies seem to say 'no pets'-anybody know what websites I could check for private landlords?tried searching but no joy-all seem to be agency organised
The presence of the dog is non negotiable-comes everywhere with us
Thanks in advance for any pointers!

Hello Colette,
I am not familiar with sites specific to Derby, but you could always try gumtree, which should have a lot of stuff (though a lot of agencies post there as well, so you might have to filter through it). I remember craigslist having stuff for London, so you could check that for Derby, it may well have expanded to there as well.
Aside from those two, there is also something called Pet Friendly Rentals UK property to rent & holiday accommodation pets welcome which caters for both long term and holiday rentals. I have never used them but they might be worth checking out.
You could also try asking in some dog 'fanclub' (!)websites and forums and the like. There are some for the peak district area if you do a quick google search. I reckon the people on those forums could probably offer some good advice.
good luck!

...strange- the link was meant to come up there and not the tagline of the website- apologies! If you click on it though it should go through!
