Smile Degrees of success on a medical course?

Ok so this is probably both a really stupid and (forum-wise) a totally misplaced question, but are there different levels of degree for medicine as there are with other subjects- i.e. first, two one, two two etc.? I've never heard of these being used with regard to medicine but feel pretty silly not knowing... thankyou ^_^

It's pass / fail. Let's face it... who'd want a dr who scraped a third! You do get ranked in your year though - and I believe that this feeds into MTAS.

For your actual medical degree you either pass or fail and if you're the top in your year I think you're told about it but yeah basically it's just a pass or a fail! However for the bmedsci degree that you get by your 3rd year at Notts you can get firsts, seconds etc. cos that's just like a degree. Hope that helps! x

Think it's above 70% in the clinical years. So the equivalent of a 1st. I think. Anyone want to clarify?

This is the guidance we were given:

Award of Honours in the Clinical Course

The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery may be awarded as a pass or a pass with Honours. A pass with Honours will be awarded to those candidates whose performance during the clinical course is considered by the Board of Examiners to be outstanding.

The following recommendations have been agreed as criteria for the award of Honours:

    1. Performance during the Clinical Practice (CP I) course will not be taken into account when determining the award of Honours.

    2. Students will be awarded Honours if:

    (i) during CP II they achieve marks of 70% or more in at least three of the following seven assessments, at least one of which must be skills based

    Obstetrics and Gynaecology (2)
    Child Health (2)
Health Care of the Elderly (1)
    Psychiatry (1)
    Specials (1)

    And

(ii) their overall average mark in ACE (CP III) is 70% or more

    3. The BMBS Board of Examiners may exceptionally award Honours to students not meeting the above criteria but whose performance is nevertheless considered outstanding.

These guidelines have been adopted with effect from Clinical Course 2004/6.

    Hope that answers your question
    Charlie
