    GEM at Notts

Hi all! Just wondered, from those of who have applied to the GEM programme in the past, what kind of things you were asked at interview?

Do interviews at Notts have a reputation, e.g. I hear they give a right grilling at some unis whereas at others, it's more about your personality.

    Thanks!

    Hi Jenny

My interview was quite a while ago, but was 3 interviews with a list of questions that varied from things about you to things that you might have an opinion on.

However, in preparing for interview, I found the following site helpful:
Medical Interviews - Medical Interview Skills, Medical Interview Techniques, Medical CVs, Medical Interview Courses

Someone from the forum here recommended it to me and I've passed it on to several others.

    LWD.

PS Didn't do the course - just printed off the free questions on the site and went through them with my mum!

    Hi,

Just a question regarding Notts GEM. I know it is a PBL based course- But i was just wondering if this is 'exclusively' PBL (ie akin to Glasgow) or whether there was a bit more integration with traditional style lectures.

Also, do most grads tend to live in Derby or Notts?- and if Derby- do ppl move over to Notts once the GEMS become integrated into the 5 yr course ??

    Thank you muchly

    Hi cuppa,

No idea what Glasgow is like, but for each week of GEM (the first 18 months) you get a PBL case and around 7 hours of PBL time. With that you get a variable number of traditional lectures (from 4ish to 10+) as well as 1 or 2 anatomy/physiology/pathology workshops that are all related to the case to some extent. You also get clinical skills sessions each week teaching clinical examination + history taking relating to the current module.

For the GEM part of the course I'd say about 75% of the students stay in Derby but once you start clinical practice a lot move to Notts. It depends on what placements you go for - QMC and City hospital in Notts, Mansfield, Lincoln, or the Derby hospitals.

    Hope this helps!
