Hi there. I will be strarting the GEM course at Derby in September. I was wondering whether Anatomy is taught via prosection, dissection or both. What are the benefits of one over the other? I have read on many threads from other med schools that teaching anatomy via dissection is meant to be a strength. Can someone please enlighten me.
During the open day, the anatomy session demonstator said that all anatomy is taught using prosections simply due to the extra time it would take to teach dissection (which wouldn't be feasible on such a condensed course).
Thanks for all your replies. BillTurner84 is right that the undergrads learn via dissection. I am worried that should I want to pursue a surgical career that I am not at a disadavantage.
I did an anatomy degree and did find dissection a good way to learn anatomy. I am going to be a GEM in September too - at the open day the Nottingham Surgical society SCRUBS was mentioned a few times - apparently GEMs can attend the events and training that they do by joining this society and there is the opportunity for dissection experience as well. Not 100% sure how accurate this info is as did not meet any existing GEMs that were members. There is a website for SCRUBs as well so check it out and see what you think. http://www.su-web.nottingham.ac.uk/~scrubs/
Also it is worth bearing in mind that a lot of medical schools don't have the facilities for dissection so there are plenty of undergrads learning anatomy quite well without it.
Yup I entered that I have an equivalent degree and it still said i was entitled to a tuition loan! So strange.
Thanks! Yeh it's strange but because I don't have biology and chemistry a-levels! Ah...
As far as I am aware you can get a maintenance loan but no fee loan.
Does it ask if you hold an equivalent or higher degree?
Well done on your offer. It's strange how you can be eligible as a...
Hi Profanius,
Thanks for your help! Is the NHS Bursary £9000 for the final year tuition or is it £3500? Also where did you read that we won't get any tuition fees? I know this is the general...
Hi ChocolateOrange
As a graduate on a 5-year course you are entitled to a maintenance loan for each year of study (~£4500 I think). The final years tuition fees are also covered by NHS bursary and...
I had that choice last year, and chose SGUL...mainly due to the course and the desire to exit Nottingham. Derby is a bit grim, but the RDH where the GEM campus is is one of the newest hospitals in...
