Is this an option for me?

    Hi,

I have recently been researching changing career to get into medicine.
I have a 2:2 BA honours in Law{which I did over 5 years - started to fail the 3rd year cos of family stuff took a year out to get some work exp in an office and completed p/t in 2005}(I chose it because I didnt know what I wanted to do at 18 - who does) and Grades BBC in History, Socialogy and English Lit.

I am applying for volunteering at my local hospice (waiting to hear back). What I really want to know is, is this a viable option for me?
(I know I have missed applications for 2008 cos of the GAMSAT deadline this year.) But should I look still look at applying for 2009? (I will be 27/8yrs old by then).

Or should I look at access courses/other options instead.

I know you are all a really nice bunch of people on here - but frank answers would be really helpful even if they are painful

    thanks very much

    Kara

    Check out this website: http://www.medschoolsonline.co.uk/index.php?pageid=11

You are more limited for course options with a 2:2 but if you're willing to consider 5 year courses, you'd meet Peninsula's min entry requirements.

Access courses might be a good option for you too as you haven't got science A-levels.

I don't think it would be impossible for you to get onto a course but it won't be easy... but then it's not easy for anyone anyway.

    Good luck!

Medicine is v competative with graduates and A Level students (and all others) applying for limited 5 yr places. I'd reccommend an access or foundation (once again I'm going to become a walking advertisement) courses such as the Bradford clin sci course and going in that way as all A Level candidates will have stronger grades and the chances are even for 5 yr courses most grads will have a 2.1 and these people will be more than likely the ones who get the places.
However - if its what u wanna do - dont give up! U will get there - try Kings Lynn access, bradford clin sci, St Helens has an access, Lincoln also has a route - there are plenty of options for u which give u better chance of getting in than applying with what u already have.
    Good luck

I have to just add that Lincoln do not accept graduates onto their programme

To be honest going by your grades and degree GAMSAT is the best route for you to take if you want to go directly onto a 4 year programme, however it's very tough and more competitive than the 5 year undergrad degree. As Lea pointed out, you could take an access course such as the ones taught at Kings Lynn or Norwich and apply that way?
