I work on the NHS Nurse Bank as an HCA. Mostly, I've been doing it over the summer, but it's basically the case that you tell them the dates that you're available and they look to see if there's work. If you want to do this sort of thing, then it is worth applying sooner rather than later as it takes a while to process the application. However, the advantage is that you're not committed to a set number of hours each week, meaning that you can take up work and put it down depending on your schedule. I'd rather not work during term time if I can help it because I find it hard enough to fit work in as it is! (Says she who is working her way through a rather enormous anatomy workshop at the moment.)
Some people manage to get jobs as notes summarisers in GP surgeries - you have to keep an eye out for adverts for these. I had one friend who worked at an Estate Agents for 4 hours every Sunday and I'm not quite sure where she got the energy from!4th year Nottingham GEM

No specific qualifications required that I'm aware of - this is partly why it is so scary that so many nursing duties are falling to HCAs. As far as I'm aware all of the med students who applied to go on the bank got jobs. You do a 3 day induction training where they go through stuff like basic life support, confidentiality, doing obs (taking temperatures, taking blood pressures, recording pulse and resp rates and BMs), using the slider sheets, washing patients (this is just over the top of my head, so its not a comprehensive list).
You can do as much or as little as you like over the holidays, so yes I went on a 3-week holiday! You're not supposed to do more than a 48 hour week, although I did hear rumour of people doing more than that. You just give them the dates of when you're available and then they ring you if they have any shifts for that day. I tended to have one day off a week - although I need the money, I also need my sanity and I needed to wash my uniform!
The first years, I think are the same as us in that you break up on the 21st December and I think we return on the 7th January. (This is positively nice compared to last year when we returned on the 2nd of January, but they didn't turn the heating on until the 9th and so I spent New Years Day very hungover and cold trying to do PBL work!)
See you next week.4th year Nottingham GEM
