nottingham hospital merger.... ???
hey guys
i had an interview at nottingham a couple of weeks ago.... apart from being told that i wont hear from them on their decision until end of march, which didnt please me as other unis seem to manage to be quicker, while i was there i met a biochem student who said that the university hospital nottingham NHS trust and nottingham city district hospital NHS trust are merging together.
firstly i beleive this is true as i have seen things on the net confirming it..... BUT... this student said that there was a huge student outcry about this news (i mean protests and everything) and that this was bad for students as it would mean theyll be moved out to the district hospital instead of being in the teaching hospital, and also that about 1000 specialists were being sacked so thois was bad for students too.
does anyone know anything about this - official line and general and student opinion ???
thanks
jim

It's definitely going to happen and has been in and out of the local media on just about a weekly basis. I'm not sure about "1000 specialists" being made redundant, that figure seems almost silly and defintely questionable. I dont think they'd want to lose specialists e.g. consultants, radiographers etc as obviously just because hospitals have merged doesn't mean work load has decreased.

yep ive heard that its true from doctors in the QMC. as for student outcry, i havent heard any. (may be cos im only a first year and havent done that much clinical stuff yet!).
my hospital visits are in city hospital anyway (some people go to QMC, others to city, some to derby and mansfield) and so far i cant see myself suffering from being there instead of QMC.
personally..i wouldnt worry about it!2nd year medic at Notts.

It won't affect you - students rotate around all the sites as Alicia said anyway - I haven't had any attachments in QMC since my 3rd year. There's been no student outcry that I'm aware of, and if there has been, it's uncalled for.
More relevant however, is the potential expansion into Lincoln. Lincoln is currently used for a small number of students for O&G only (I was one of them, and it was absolutely fantastic), however, the numbers going there may increase.Joy

I don't think it will make a huge difference to students. Firstly, in the sense that QMC and City Hospital both have medical students on placement, they are both teaching hospitals. Secondly, there are fewer students at City Hospital and therefore smaller teaching groups (my firm when I start the clinical course soon is only 6 students!).
I don't know much about the merger, but I get the impression it's essentially an administrative change.
Regarding Lincoln, there are about 12 students going there for the first part of the clinical course (CP I) from March, and there are definitely going to be more students sent there in future.

I think the "student outcry" you heard about probably relates to the afore mentioned Lincon placements (which could be up to 14 weeks). Many of the third years didn't seem happy about it - one of the main issues was that they'd have to live there in Lincon University halls. Official line here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/l...re/4673016.stm.
As far as I'm aware this had nothing to do with the QMC/City merger.
This article http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/n...re/4600224.stm says
"QMC's chief executive David Edwards ... warned of around 1,000 job cuts being implemented over the next three years."
I don't think this means enitrely "specialists" - I read another article where Unsion were campaigning against the change- one of the reasosn cited was loss of admin staff. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/n...re/4413502.stmLast edited by Iceman; 10-02-2006 at 11:32 PM.

does it really matter if you have to live there for a couple of months? i think this is pretty standard at most unis isnt it?
and yes..i agree with joy - lincoln is a very nice city..!2nd year medic at Notts.

yes I think it does matter - they were talking about 14 weeks which is 3 1/2 months moved away to lincoln which is a long way from notts so any commitments you have in notts such as sports teams, friends etc you wouldn't be able to keep up. Also you'd be paying to live in a house that you wouldn't be using but going back into halls!! Work shedules would be completely different to the first years in the halls so this could cause problems and now having moved out of halls I certainly don't want to move back!!
