Newcastle - GAMSAT
I have read that completing the GAMSAT adds weight to an application to Newcastle. I was wondering whether anyone knew how much weight this actually carries?

I never heard anything about this, where did you read it?
The only relevance a GAMSAT result has to Newcastle to my knowledge is that it can be used as an example of recent academic work if you have been out of education for more than 2-3 years.Newcastle Fresher 09!

I applied to Newcastle 4 year, and done both the UKCAT and the GAMSAT (done the GAMSAT for Nottingham though). I read that Newcastle can use it as proof of recent academic endeavour, so I emailed them and they said they would take it into account if I sent them my results, which I did. They still rejected me without interview though...bastards. Have an offer from Notts anyway, so all ends well.
My point being, if you're doing the GAMSAT anyway, then send them your results, it can do no harm. But I wouldn't pay the money and spend months revising for an exam that is unlikely to add much to your application. Especially if you've graduated within the last 3 years.

This is not correct, or at least it wasn't in 2007 - when I emailed them my GAMSAT score, they told me categorically that they weren't interested (I was just trying to bump up my application!!)

One of the main things they focused on in my interview was how academically demanding the course was, and how I thought I'd be able to cope with it. One of the things I mentioned was the work I'd done for GAMSAT, and subsequently my score in relation to my non-Chemistry/Biology background. Judging from their body language, they seemed quite happy with that part of the answer.
However, unless you fall into the 'recent academic success' category, I wouldn't mention it before interview - they don't ask for it, and can't have expected you to do it -
but it felt like something it was good to offer them at the interview as a piece of supporting evidence.1st BSc Hons, UKCAT 790, GAMSAT 65
