PROBLEM?!>? moving out in 3rd and 5th year

hey, i have 2 offers for medicine, one newcastle and one cardiff. i am having trouble deciding between them, and at the moment it seems that there is only one thing putting me off newcastle.
This one thing is the whole system of being moved out of newcastle in 3rd year and again in 5th year.
I was obviously aware of this prior to applying, but am now more worried about it than i was before.
Can anyone who is from newcastle or otherwise help me out here...
how bad is having to move? what are the places like that you move to? how much does it disrupt friend groups? etc...

any help would be much appreciated

another question about it: how many people go to each base unit together/?

The baseunit system is not all that bad, the only baseunit that you definitely have to move out for is Tees, and your chances of getting Tees depend very much on what the Durham students do each year, for example for my year most of the Durham students chose Tees for third year so not as many Newcastle students had to move until 5th year. Tees is quite a big baseunit in terms of numbers of students that they take, so chances are you many get sent there at some stage (although I've managed to avoid it, but this is mainly because of the Stockton students deciding to stay put in 3rd year)

Moving out is a bit of a sad thing in 3rd year because at that stage you still have friends on other courses that you want to see, but in 5th year it is not as bad because hopefully lots of your friends will be going too, so people tend to find houses together.

For Wear and Northumbria, in general people do not have to move out of Newcastle as most places are reachable by car, and the main downside tends to be only that you have longer days with travelling.

The only places where you do have to move out is Carlise, and Whitehaven in 5th year, and not *that* many people go to either of these places.

If you're really against any chance of moving out then don't come, because sod's law says that since you are bothered by it, you'll be allocated a baseunit that will require you to move.

thanks alot, that was really helpful.
also, when you say 'moving out', do you mean moving out of newcastle? in second year are most people out of halls and in seperate houses? cheers

When I say moving out I mean moving out of Newcastle, and this is either to another house which you pay rent for, say in Middlesborough somewhere, or into hospital accommodation, say in Carlise or Whitehaven which may or may not be free (these things change all the time, at the moment I think they may be free.)

Halls are only for first years, by second year people have moved into privately rented accommodation with friends.

ps. I still do not know how to spell Carlise. hmm.

This whole moving out malarky is just bacause Newcastle Medical School covers a very wide area, and i'm sure at most other medical schools, whilst you may not have to move out you have to do a lot of travelling because not all students can be catered at one hospital!

I wouldnt let this put you off Newcastle, as Fried_Rice said, its only if you're in Tees you have to move out and chances are you wont have to until 5th year. By then, you'll probably be so obsessed with finals you'll be glad the distractions of Newcastle have been taken away!
