Erm, im afriad if you read the Newcastle admissions policy that is exactly how they do it Kat. I could write "f*** off" as a personal statement and according to Newcastles admissions policy, provided i had the minimum academic requirements and a strong UKCAT i would get an interview. It is only after the interview that the personal statement etc are taken into account. They then score you're P.S etc, as well as you're performance at interview, and decide whether you are good enough.

It seems that they will keep interviewing and assessing candidates until they have found enough suitable candidates to fill the 300+ spots.
So yes, techincally someone with a UKCAT of 400 could get in, but that would require the vast majority of people with 400+ to be absolute gash at interview and on their UCAS form.

They leave interview periods open until March as they will be interviewing around 1000~ applicants before they gain 300 suitable ones, which takes a lot of time. On top of this there are the GEP students to be interviewed which tends to take place later on by all accounts.

Saying all that though i would imagine that provided you have a score of ~650 you've got a good shot at getting an interview, though it's likely to be later on as they have to move down the list.
Its like you said, you've just got to knuckle down with work and wait it out. Good luck with it all

Thats the opposite of what last years statistics said according to the earlier post. It was more 400:300 than 1000:300

Still, it is important to highlight those "good odds" are more a testament to those people with high academic scores being very able at backing them up at interview than suggesting we're more likely to get in.
Presumably we will be rejected or accepted with interviews till they have a certain amount of offers going out (whatver they've calculated will result in the correct amount of spaces being filled) and then just reject everyone else; so does that mean they dont even know the UKCAT cut-off score yet?

The 2005 GMC report and an admissions book from 2007 both state that Newcastle interview around 1000 applicants, i'm not sure where the 400 came from as that wouldn't even be enough people to make the amount of offers necessary.

The impression i've got (and im not 100% sure) is that Newcastle don't use a cut-off as such. They continue interviewing the highest UKCAT score candidates until they find enough suitbale applicants. As i said, following that premise someone with 450 at UKCAT could get an interview, provided 99% of higher scoring applicants were rubbish at interview.

Another theory on this is that Newcastle do set a cut-off which means they have ~1000 interviews, and they will pick teh best however many out of that 1000, even if 900 of them are rubbish (highly unlikely obviously).

Either way it all works out the same for the number of people getting interviews. Statistics shouldn't matter anyway, if you go in to you're interview and impress them you should get an offer, simple as. Relying on low levels of competition isn't the right way to be looking at it.

The stats on the first page show roughly 800 interviews to 600 offers. I just cancelled it down to 400:300 cos you used 1000:300 so i thought it might be simpler to compare.
Ive no idea whether the stats on the 1st page are right btw...

waaaa, I just wanna find out whether im in or not!
