Please can anyone help?
Hi,
I'm interested in neurosurgery but i have no idea what the course involves and it would help if any students could clarify this for me. Is there a demand for neurosurgeons? I'm probably going to pick this course or medicine but i would like to know everything about the two courses before i choose. Is there anyone who has had this choice to make? if so i would appreciate your advise.
Thanks

Medical degree allows you to train as a neurosurgeon.
5 years at med school then 2 years as foundation doctor then oooohh up to 15-20 years training as a "junior surgeon"before you become that glamorous neurosurgeon.
There are no degrees which allow you to walk straight into an operating theatre.
Suggest you choose your GCSEs before chosing a course.Medicine is the only career with a 100% fail rate - you spend years reviewing people in clinic, readmitting them, tweaking their inhalers, prolonging their dying process.
I want to do something useful with my life, like Orthopaedics.

Emm, to become a neurosurgeon you need to study medicine first... I hope that this does not come as a big shock to you. All surgeons study medicine, then do basic training and finaly choose to specialize in surgery, neurosurgery being one of options.
*Should type faster lol.Manchester final year.

The above isnt quite correct, i dont think. Career path as follows under MMC:
5/6 Years at Medical School
2 Years Foundation Training
8 Years Specialist Training
Consultancy / Staff-Grade Post
There is demand for neurosurgeons, however it is one of the most competitive surgical specialities out there, as there are relatively few neurosurgeons across the whole country (<200) and as a result there are <10 new training posts per year nationwide.
Dont be discourgaed! Good luck,Marc

Despite what the above have said you can qualify with a degree in 'neurology' without doing medicine. However I have no idea what sort of work you'd be able to do with that, perhaps its entirely academic (?).

I'm afraid this is quite different to "neurosurgery" despite being related in subject matter. To become either a neurologist or neurosurgeon you require a medical degree.
You can indeed do a BSc or BMedSci in Neuroscience but this has nothing to do with clinical practice.Marc

indeed-the OP might be interested in going to UCL, as the National Institute of Neurology & Neuroscience is part of it. anyways dude, i think the main thing for you is to get into medical school. after that, do the clinical rotations which will then help you decide properly...although its always good to have a goal

Thanks guys. i'm also interested in it although i know very little about it. I'll complete med school in my country after my 6th year. I'm in 2nd year now. Then i'll do 2 years housemanship and then i'll shoot to specialize in the US.
