I think the geographical areas of Foundation Schools are what makes them popular, rather than the med schools they are associated with. Oxford is a very compact FS and all of the hospitals are not too far from London, and are all within commuting distance of Oxford.
East Anglia is spread over a very wide and very rural area, and therefore less attractive to a lot of people.
Last year Birmingham was massively oversubscribed, due to the fact it was only hospitals in Birmingham that were included. Many of my friends didn't get a place. However this year it was undersubscribed due to the fact they included Shropshire and Staffordshire (again a large, rural area).

    hi damian
i was not describing how we are allocated to a foundation school but i was referring to splatman's question in which he asked how job allocations were made, which is done after you have been allocated to a foundation school.

By the way, looking at applicants from London medical schools, for some of them, around 60% got their first choice FS...

Err NW Thames had 560 applications for 266 posts.
That works out at 47% of people getting their first choice if it was there.

Amy I deleted my post as i figured that as soon as i had put it up...sorry!

not quite as low, the only reason being is that some people decided to apply elsewhere, but in any case 60% for some medical schools is certainly not quite as high as the average and the figures Prof Gallen are coming out. I am not really suggesting the 93% is inaccurate, just people need to be cautious when intepreting UKFPO figures, esp the year(s) below

Not quite as low as what? That works out at 47% of those who applied to NWT as a first choice getting in.

London is a bit of a problem in interpreting figures with the amount of applications it had this year. However last year it was undersubscribed...i bet we see a yo yo effect next year again.

Not having bothered to do the maths myself, is anyone left without a job, regardless of if they get their first place?

    No. You're guaranteed a FY1 place. Somewhere.
