Confused
hey. Just thought i would post a query i have as it is something about MMC and a medical career path that i cant quite get my head around
Right so i know after you finish your degree you complete your 2 year Foundation Programme. And then after that you apply for specialty training.
As these specialty training posts are so competitive, it is inevitable that some people will not get a post. So what do you do if you dont get a post after F2? Are you just unemployed or is there some sort of non-training job you can get until you can reapply?
Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, Has just been bugging meGCSES: 9A*, 1 A

I'm pretty sure there are non-training jobs. If you look around the different threads on this forum you'll find more info about it, people have asked similar questions before. Its all very confusing and your question isn't stupid.

first, you are right. candidates from prev. years do stack over current years, and to my understanding, this is happening across CT/ST training. This problem is worsening according to media reports, although from the figures released by NHS I couldn't see a huge difference.
I am not too sure abt the competitiveness of every single speciality though. Some specialities are definitely more competitive than others, e.g. thoracic surgery. I am sure there are specialities where competition level is well tolerable.
and apart from those who did get the post and those who go for non-training posts, there are increasing number of clinical fellowships where people below SpR grades could study for a PhD or MD. They will be out of the pool but still classified as employed (coz NHS pays for it).2005: MBChB Medical Studies, Chinese University of Hong Kong (Quitted)

The competition ratios for the different specialities are published. If you do a google search they should be quite easy to find. The non-training posts like staff grade posts still exist. The problem now seems to be with the experience you gain from doing these. This is because if you wanted to do specialist training in say, Paediatrics, you are only allowed to have a certain amount of experience in this area. So if you do a non-training post in this area it might then be difficult for you to get a training job in this area. I'm pretty sure that this is what everyone is getting very annoyed with at the moment. Anyone feel free to correct me!
