For those left jobless for FY1
Hi
I applied to NE Thames foundation and didn't get a job. I'm from Barts and there are 50 people at my medschool without a job. Most of us are able to go through to phase 2 but a few have been told that their score is too low to enter the next round. Among those left jobless were some of the top performers and those with amazing CVs. Most of us are in complete shock and can't understand why we're in this position. We have yet to find out our scores.
I want to know whether students from other medschools are affected and to what extent. Is this just a london trend or are those who applied outside of London also affected?
I'm keen to re-do my personal statement and have it re-marked before the next round. I'm interested to know what the general opinion is - whether you're for or against this.
As it stands, it seems unlikely we'll be allowed to change our forms but that doesn't seem to be set in stone. If there is enough support, we may be able to change this.
Thanks. I'd appreciate any input.

Apparently there are 39 unmatched from Imperial. I don't know a great deal about the situation though (am in year 4 of 6), but it appears there are about 250 students from London unmatched after round 1.

There are people from Leeds who are left un matched as well.
I doubt that they'd let you submit another form, as then it'd have to be re-marked etc and that'd take even longer.
Hope everything goes well!
PS I'm in 4th year so luckily I have another year in studentland before the s**t hits the fan!Leeds Widening Access to Medical School (WAMS) Scheme

i have a question, will the applicants who need to go through Phase 2 be guaranteed a job? - i.e anywhere between the first and last ranked job, if you put all the choices down? I am wondering this because some ppls scores are not high enough to be eligible for phase 2 - does that mean no. of Phase 2 applicants = no. of jobs available?

As far as I know, people who scored less than 20 are not put forward for phase 2.
You're not guaranteed a job in phase 2. Its the same process as phase 1. You put down a certain number of choices... if there's a person ranked higher than you for all your choices, then you're not allocated a post and I guess you have to wait for clearing and hope for vacancies!
(By the way, nothing I say in this is fact! This is all that I can gather from vague pieces of information I can find!!)

How did people manage to score less than 20 though? Obviously I'm curious because I'll have to fill one of these forms out in the future.
Was it that they didn't reflect on their experiences enough, re-used the same examples or just that their examples were weak or unbelievable? Are you guys getting feedback on this?Last edited by m00ple; 17-06-2006 at 10:07 PM.

I'm from leeds and I'm currently jobless.
Along with the information that I wasn't matched I also got the extra kick in the teeth that my score was in the lowest 5%. I've sent a email asking for a breakdown of my score since when I compared my form with someone who got their first choice I really couldn't see a difference.
From what I can gather you just resubmit your form (in all its original glory) to apply for phase 2. However if like me you are in the bottom 5% the MENCAP (sorry MDAP) want to test your clinical skills so you will have to take some sort of osce.
This is ridiculous on so many levels.
1) My ability to fill out an application form has absolutely no bearing on my clinical skills.
2) Surely a better way to prove my clinical competance would be to contact my references who have seen me on the wards and ask them.
3) If you really feel that an exam is needed why don't you just wait a damn month until I take my finals!
I haven't heard anything about scoring less than 20 means you can't enter phase 2. As far as I know despite being in the bottom 5% I'm still eligible for phase 2.

atheros if you dont mind me asking where did u find out the information that people with scores less than 20 are not put through to phase 2?
i would also like to find out whether all UK-medical graduates will end up with a job as long as they pass their finals, or is there a shortage of F1 posts this year?
pulley yeah that is really crap i dont understand it myself they have really made a mess of the system and peoples application results seem totally random - let me know if they do get bak to u with a breakdown as im not having any luck getting answers via email

Some lady came to talk to the jobless finalists, claiming to be the manager of our 'deanery'?!! She is the manager of something. She told us that those scored as below 5% = those who scored below 20.
again, nothing I say is fact!
