Different unis have different ways of working it out who they will interview. I used http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/UKCAT and http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki...E_Requirements then went on each uni website. If I was still unsure if my results/ work experience weren't good enough for the unis I liked, I contacted the admissions officers. (I was also a bit geeky and made a chart of my shortlisted ones to help me decide which ones I had the right GCSEs/ UKCAT etc) .
If there is a reason why your GCSEs weren't all A*s get your referee to explain it.
Also, go to WWW.thestudentroom.co.uk and go in the forums about each uni/ ask the people on there what they think.
