The UKCAT score doesn't count for that much (depending on where you apply)... There's no harm in applying. If you get four rejections so be it, then you can take your gap year, get your grades, get a better UKCAT score and obtan loads more work experience - you'll then be more a solid applicant and stand a good chance at getting a place.

What was your UKCAT score? You keep mentioning that it was bad, just wondering how bad. Was it anywhere near 538 bad?
