hey fried_rice!! yup practising the lifts etc wasn't too bad. my 'victim' was about 10 1/2 stone but a similar size. it was just the actual scenario that nearly killed me. plus my instructor on scenario 1 or 2 deliberately swam against a ridiculously strong current for all of the 30+minute dive. We were both so knackered that i have no idea how i managed to deal with his 'problems' of overexhaustion, out of air etc... great fun though especially seeing as all of the instructors are like family to me...

Lol ah the memories I have of diving!
I remember being nearly drowned when playing uncoscious while my 'buddy' (love that word!) was practising giving me mouth to mouth on the surface when the sea was very choppy so every second wave came over my face and into my nose, mouth and salt water in my eyes as well! I was rathter unimpressed.
Then of course I got to get her back when it was my turn to practice so fair's fair!

Oh and no, this wasn't actual mouth to mouth, just pretending to lean in and do it.

Where did you all learn to dive? I am a Hong Kong diver myself. The visibility there is usually s**t (less than a meter when the waves come from certain directions!) but this is actually really good for learning as you can't cheat when doing searches or compass bearings or anything!

I miss diving now.

As i say mostly Lanzarote for courses...i know its not very adventurous but they are all really good mates out there so i knew doing my courses would be fun fun fun!! lol got my rescue diver card through the post yesterday as well as ANOTHER EFR card?!? oh well at least i have a spare...

well i wana get this post active agen if i can, the uni i am applying to (see signature) so all of them have a dive group? i know that imperial has one.
also i have only dived in the UAE and dubai is bollox for diving, all the construction has ruined the natural water, only 6 yeaes ago there were tutrles on the beaches...now u have to go like 12 hour drive to see them.

Ah that's interesting...I lived in Dubai all my life as well. The diving was good on the East Coast, Dubai was crap for it. Imperial and Kings have a dive club in the form of the UoL scuba club, transfer your PADI qualifications to BUSAC ones.

Some good diving places I've been during med school (i.e. relatively cheap!):

Sharm, obviously. Loads of life but not much to do out of the water other than sit on the beach. Went with Regal Dive, they were excellent.

Gozo (off Malta): the aquatic life wasn't as great as the Red Sea but there was still to see and loads more wrecks, caves etc. to dive. Definitely worth a look if you like wrecks. We dived with Gozo Aqua Sports, they were excellent and our guide for the week was superb. Also plenty of sightseeing stuff if you have non-divers with you or want a day off.

Pembrokeshire: obviously vis isn't always great as it's UK water but lots of life with plenty of fish and crabs around and during the autumn you see loads of seals and they are often quite adventurous and friendly. West Wales Divers are the best company.

Anglesey: also excellent with some nice wrecks, shore dives. Anglesey Divers are a great dive school and their courses are well worth the money.

Anyone else know any good dive centres in the UK? Particularly along the South Coast towards Brighton.

hey guys, im looking for somewhere to do my padi open water whilst on holiday but im struggling to find anywhere where i can actually afford the flights and im slightly dubious about some of the dive schools ive seen advertised on the net that are based in med countries where i could actually afford to go. Was just wondering if any of you have any suggestions as to which countries have decent diving and if you know of any reputable dive schools in the area. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

You should go with Explorers.co.uk to Ocean College in Sharm El Sheik.
A week including flights and course and accomidation starts from about 350 pounds. It includes breakfast and if you are feeling really skint you can get half board for 40 for a week. The teahing is really good with international instructors. Obviously diving is fab cos its red sea.
