I was so enthusiastic about Tortora as a fresher but hardly use it any more as it definitely doesn't go into enough detail. Still good as a starting point though to a completely new topic.
Personally quite like Sherwood's Human Physiology from cells to systems I think it's called.

I'm a big fan of Guyton. It's true that it's on the detailed side but it is very well written and is enjoyable to read. Also lots of the detail is in a smaller font so you can always skip those bits.

Skip the detailed bits - love it - very important! There is a disgraceful amount to learn, and we don't need to know ALL of it :P

What do people think of medical sciences by naish, revest and syndercombe court? I know its not a pure physiology text but its geared specifically at medics, and is the science sister of kumar and clark, and it explains stuff at a nice level of detail in a clear easy way. Im a fan, I ve got to say!!!

We prefer guyton over all other pysiology textbooks in my university (KE situated in Pakistan).Well here we prefer the more detailed and trditional methods of study and personally I think its good for first years. Yes a little more detailed than required but atleast you are sure that you haven't missed any topic.

Can any Liverpool medics recommend a good physiology textbook? Especially for third year?
Many thanks x"Where the clear stream of reason
has not lost its way into the dreary desert sand of dead habit;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action -
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake."-- Where the Mind is Without Fear, Rabindranath Tagore

Why has nobody mentioned Ganong? It's an excellent physiology text. As is Berne and Levy.
