Need advice from 2ndyr+ med students
Am in the process of buying books and hearing a variety of reccomendations. What's your opinion on them..
1. Grey's anatomy for students VS clinically orientated medicine MOORE
2. McMinns Clinical Anatomy VS Grey's anatomy for students
3. Clinical skills KUMAR CLARK VS Macleod's clinical examination
4. other possibilites instead of principles of anatomy and physiology TORTORA?
5. worth buying Medicine At A Glance DAVEY?
thanks

Moore is better than student Gray's, it has more detail.
McMinns is an atlas, has real pics of cadavers so you can't compare it to Gray's.
Pretty much everyone uses Macleods
Guyton is very good for anat + phys but most people don't want that kind of detail, at Manc most people use MartiniFY1 Manchester

I really wouldn't recommend that you buy books until you have tried them out first. For example, a lot of people would prefer Gray's but I personally prefer Moore and Dalley for anatomy combined with Tortora.
Also you have put Kumar and Clark with McLeods...they're two different types of book. Kumar and Clark is a medicine book that goes through the different diseases etc. McLeods on the other hand is a book that goes through clinical exam skills...how to examine patients.
An alternative to Kumar and Clark is Davidson's which I've just bought now after borrowing both from the library last year. I prefer Davidson's, others prefer K+C.
A lot of people have wasted an enormous amount on books by buying them too soon into first year and then discovering they didn't like them.

Yup

You can take out four books from the library and the great thing is that they have a self issue/return service now so you can get them at the weekend as well. (only at Wonford, don't bother about the main campus library, checked there last year, the only medicine books they have are very old).
If you can't be bothered to carry books or you have too many out you could always do a bit of study at the LSRC. I noticed yesterday that they have quite a few copies of the latest edition of Davidson's (20th) and the newest edition of Moore and Dalley. (and K+C and Tortora etc)
I know how tempting it is to buy new books now, I was really excited about that this time last year...if you really want to buy some now you could get that Mc Leods Clinical Examination, you'll probably be using that anyway. You could also pick up an anatomy colouring book. I'd recommend Kapit and Elson.
As far as I remember Moore and Dalley is quite good for the first case for the anatomical positions etc.
Anyway if you ask any of us most people are gonna say the same thing, honest!
If you have any questions when you start feel free to PM me
