Awesome Medicine Texts & Handbooks
In going through 3 months of Internal Medicine, I came across something like 50 decent looking books to choose from. Frustrating as it was, I ended up buying about 15 of them based on word of mouth and simple history of being used. I have distilled the best to the following:
+ As far as texts go, Current Medical Diagnosis & Treatment rules the landscape. Its very well written, trustworthy, up to date, and manageable. Definately the best text you will actually read from.
+ In terms of handbooks... there are 2 great ones out there with different and complimentary approaches. If you are looking for an all in one compendium reference handbook, being concise, extremely well written and layed out, then The Consult Manual of Internal Medicine is THE book to get. This gem has it all. From the basics to the resident/ fellow level of depth. Great for the medical student and resident alike. Now... if you are looking for a very quick reference, then Pocket Medicine fits the bill, being portable with a very nice bulleted layout format. It covers most subject in a very small page or so. I personally combined the two. On the wards, I would have both handy. But at home I would read The Consult Manual of IM with occassional use of The Current text for the zebras.
I am now a 4th year, being in search of the 'greats'. If anyone is interested in an outstanding physical diagnosis text, the look no further than The Art & Science of Bedside Diagnosis. It made me weep. Take care.
