Hm, i have the Insiders Guide to Medical schools but it doesn't have a red cover. Does that mean I have a completely different edition? My one has a nice blue and pink cover

Tis a brilliant book.

It does indeed.

Your copy is, if I remember correctly, last years' edition

You are correct though, it is an excellent resource.

 Do you reckon I should get the 'new' one then? I've got the old orange and blue one (lol, sorry, I don't know the dates) and that is almost exactly the same was the pink and blue one Oh, except they've lengthened the responses to the five best and worst things. And added in a few new med. schools.

I'm inclined to say no. Try and make your school careers dept. buy the updated copy and use that to supplement what is contained in your edition!

I used the 2000 edition when I applied in 2001 and it didn't hurt matters.

For anyone that has got both 'So You Want to Be a Brain Surgeon?' and the 'The Insider's Guide to Medical Schools', can you tell me book is better?

Cheers

They are very different books about different things.

"So you want to be a Brain Surgeon" is about the different areas//disciplines you might specialise in later in your career. It is not about choosing a medical school, comparing medical schools, and is not directly that useful for someone just at the point of going to medical school, although I imagine that it could be useful for medical students.

"The Insider's Guide to Medical Schools" does what it says on the tin, but is probably not much use once you have got into a medical school as a medical student.

I think the title is misleading. I'd go for a more scientific "What BMA reps at each school think their school is like". So, in that, it is opinion, and can be subject to argument, especially as some BMA reps are strange creatures - I know, I've met a fair amount. It's useful, in that it gives a brief synopsis of each course and school, but, as hinted at before, it doesn't give things that you would like to know when you started. If you wanted to pick and choose from courses, like so many people do, by just looking at a text, and deciding whether a course 'is for you', on that; then maybe the book is for you. Takes me back to what I was saying to someone yesterday about the trade-off about being informed, and just making decisions on pure luck. Even though people read this book - are they truly informed about the decision on course they are about to make; or are they just going to rely on luck, that the decision that they made was the correct one?? Are they really informed??
