A PhD would be worth a few points in the longlisting. In the shortlisting & interviews it will only really help if it is in a relevant subject or if you are applying for an academic post.

A PhD would be worth a few points at short-listing stage in its own right. The other spin-offs that usually come with a PhD (conference presentations and papers) generally score you a few more points again.

Occasionally, applications are time-limited with regard to the above (e.g. you only score points if done in the last 5 years prior to application – so prior to med school won’t definitely count – but I have only seen this stipulation once). Occasionally, you score slightly higher points if the research is directly relevant. However, at ST level, they are looking more for potential, so basic and transferable research skills are seen as relevant, even if specific subject matter is not.

Bottom line – a PhD is a valued qualification, but there are many easier ways to score points on an application if you haven’t already got one!

Thanks so much!! your pointers have been really useful,

I havn't actually got a PHD only a BSc MSc and PGCE (And fingers crossed if I pass my finals my med degree) but was getting stressed about being disadvantaged for not having a PHD after graduating from med school and was looking to start writing research proposals to try and secure some funding to undertake a PHD. But I think after the comments I'll hold it for now and see if I can get into paeds without killing myself writing a thesis!
