Questions to ask while shadowing a GP.

In a few weeks time, I'm going to start my work experience in shadowing a GP.
In preparation, I was writing down some questions I could ask him.

I would appreciate if anyone can suggest a few ideas.

Now that the GP knows what a career in medicine entails, would they go through the current process to get to where they currently are. If so/if not, why so/ why not?

Dont be scared to ask questions. They love it when you show interest. They will look busy but thats their job, they really wont mind. Ask questions like what made them go into medicine, what they like about the job, what they dont like? Any other job they would have chosen if it wasnt for med, best casestheyve seen? Worst cases theyve seen. And also if youre curious about how the doctor would deal
With a certain patient they see, ask him! Obviously not in front of tje
Patient but after they leave you can ask something like "what was their background?" "what would you have done if this and that happened?"

    Good luck!

Have you asked any questions yet? If so, could we hear the response?
Also, what do you feel you've gained from your shadowing?

What sacrifices they had to make to get into medicine and what sacrifices they make now to stay in it. This is good to know, as when you reach interview, if asked you can let them know that you have an idea of the life ahead of you in medicine. Also it will help you know if this is the job for you!

What they like about their job, what they really dont like?

I would avoid questions about the science etc, unless it really interests you. Just because I think there are more valuble questions to someone starting medicine, such as the life of a doctor etc.

Well done and enjoy it, I am sure you will ! Sam is right, people love it when you take an interest. When there is no patient present, relax and be sure to find out what you want to know.

Ask him if changes like re-validation, increased regulation would put him off going into the profession now.

I'm so excited, I've my hospital work experience finally arranged next week in Plastic Surgery. Any questions/topics you suggest I should explore/ask?

It's going to cost me over £100 commuting Mon-Fri so I want to make the most of it!

    Thanks.

With the recent figures relating to patient dissatisfaction with GP's / surgeries, I will be extremely interested in what GP's believe is behind this, and what they are going to do differently (if at all) in attempt to maximise patients satisfaction at their own surgery.

It will also be important for you to known where your career is going in 5, 10+ years. Ask about the benefits of being a salaried GP vs Partner vs Locum.

Thirdly, I suggest asking their opinion on Nurse prescribers; this is one of the areas in hot debate currently as many practices are now hiring prescribers to ease the strain on the doctors whilst saving on much needed working capital. However, many doctors feel that it is not right to give a nurse this responsibility, and also - perhaps of equal importance - many patients are expressing anxiety in regards to having a nurse prescribe for them.

Best of luck. Cant wait to read your answers to as many of our questions as possible!

I was asked if I wanted tea and was offered so much chocolate and biscuits, not the other way round

I had a great week but didn't have time to ask any side questions
