    Do I stand a chance?

    Hello.

I am 17 years old and have just completed my GCSEs (last month). My grades were quite food somebody who came back to this country at the age of 6 and started learning English at that age.

I got 3A'S, 4B'S and 2C'S. I have my A's in Public Services and ICT, my B's in Business Studies, Core Science and Additional Science. However, my poor grades were the C in maths and the C in English. I know they're poor, so I dedicated some time to re-sit my Maths and English GCSE exams.

My other current situation is that I have taken ICT, Business Studies and Computing for A levels. Next year, after I have my B in maths i'm going to take Chemistry and Biology and keep Computing but drop ICT and Business. What would that mean? How many Alevels would I get?

My questions is to you medical experts, doctors and current students. Do I have a chance of getting in to Medicine at any Uni in the UK? It would be lovely if you could reply with some advice, tips, forums, sites where I can get more help.

mate no offence but i know someone who moved here aged 16, learnt english and got 7 A*s, 2 A, B and C at GCSE at first attempt, 3 As and 2 Bs in A Levels and still didnt manage to get into the medical schools on first attempt.

I dont want to dishearten you but the moral of the story is that you should really put your heart into your A levels, get all A*s and then hopefully you will be able to get into a med school if you are really passionate about it. to be honest, if you want something badly and are prepared to work hard for it then no one, no one can stop you from getting it.

    my 2 cents
    GCSEs:
    7 A*, 2A, B and C

    A Level:3 A, 2B (chem and gen studs, 4 off in chem)

    UKCAT:
    AR-590, VR-660, QR-700, DA-690; Tot: 2640, Avg: 660

w/e: 3 weeks in hospital, 2 weeks in Surgery, St John Ambulance for 1 month and going.

Why have you taken A levels unre;ated to Medicine? Wouldn't it be better to take science and maths A-level s and concentrate on thsoe rather than doing it the way you're suggesting?

Using the old 'language' excuse to cover your GCSE grades just doesn't work... It's like me saying I only came last in a race because I'm not that fit (valid excuse maybe, but no one cares)... But your grades aren't that bad anyway.

And why have you taken non-science related subjects at A-Level first time round... That's absolutely pointless and just a waste of your own time. Never mind how many of this and that you'll get after it; just take 4 subjects including 2 science subjects at AS-Level and drop one non-science subject at A-Level.

Also very (very) few Universities accept GCSE resits, so the only point in sitting them is to prove to yourself you deserved a better grade. (I resat my English from a B to an A*, no Universities will accept the A*, but hell, I'm happy I resat it anyway.)

Also you'll just have to beware of what Universities you apply to... There's a handful that will only accept Grade B+ in English and Maths (and won't accept the resits as I mentioned earlier.)
    2010 entry:
    Cambridge - Offer: A*AA [Firm]
    Sheffield - Offer: AAB
Durham - March: [offer / rejection]
Leicester - March: [offer / rejection]

The fact that most Universities won't accept GCSE resits?

Well, like I said, I resat a GCSE myself; and when I phoned up Universities to see if they would accept it, nearly all of them said no.

Cardiff and HYMS are the only ones I can remember that said they do.
