What to wear for an interview?

You know, just in case I get one :P. I was wondering what's seen as appropriate interview wear (for a girl) - is a suit too formal? Thanks in advance!

I had an interview (for foundation med) last year and wore a suit. Another guy who went before me had an untucked shirt without a tie which looked scruffy, unclean and unironed. He was wearing trainers...(don't look like him).

I wore a black suit, white shirt, tie, black trouseres and black shoes.

Granted, I didn't get in, but I highly doubt he did.

    Suit it!

Common advice seems to be to dress as you would expect a doctor to dress - so good shoes, smart trousers/skirt (*not* a short one!) and a shirt and tie for men, and a blouse/smart top for women being the least formal you should probably aim for.

I don't think that adding a smart jacket will hurt either - for men or women. I think it will give anyone an extra air of professionalism. I don't think you need to worry about being overdressed as long as you don't turn up in a tailcoat (men) or a ballgown (women).

Imagine how you would dress if you were a doctor presenting a paper at a fairly formal conference - I think that's probably about the standard to aim for.

(I would love to see some of the male applicants turn up to their interviews in ballgowns...)

Arienette, I was thinking, provided I get an interview that a white collared shirt and smart black trousers or a skirt (knee length). And like algy said, a jacket would make it look extra smart. Also I would think it is a good idea to tie your hair up in a ponytail or bun so that you don't fidget with your hair or anything. Shoes- black, flats would be best, but a max of 2/3 inch heels would be fine. Of course it doesn't improve your chances of getting in, but looking professional is never a bad thing especially in medicine.

    Go as slutty as possible.

And before you ask... No, this is not too formal. And yes, it will improve your chances of getting in. Vastly.

If you would like approval of your choice of clothing, then email me a picture (or more than one at different angles - it gives a better perspective).

well, IF I get an interview I intend on wearing a knee length black pencil skirt, opaque black tights and a white blouse thing. I'll also wear my hair up and with minimal jewellery, as I tend to fiddle with necklaces/rings if I'm nervous.

Same here, I always play with jewelery so also keeping that to a minimum. Christ! I forgot about tights, the interviews, if I get any, are going to be during winter, going to need tights. Sorry I forgot, it's still so hot in Hong Kong.
