Just my thoughts, but I don't think playing the statistics game works. Loads of people will be doing this, so places with a low applicant: offer ratio will be flooded with applicants - which defeats the whole point of it in the first place. Far better to go where you want to go.

I would say apply where u want to go. But i would also say be weary of using one of your choices on a medical school that places such high emphaise on academic requirments if you havn't got the grades. To name one from my own experience edinburgh. I applied there with 6A* and 3As and 4As declared at as. They were nice in their feedback but stated that my academic side let me down as most people there have 8A*s.

the only instances i know where the stats game has wurked is when -
1. u ave insider knowledge of admissions numbers cock-ups at a uni meaning they are a good bet next year...... which all depends on that info not getting out, and that knowledge is rarely ever restricted.
2. a new med skool in the furst year of its life, when peeple simply dont know it exists and it so gets fewer applications. Again, you need to be pretty on the ball to learn about one of these openings - insider knowledge for instance.
So in real terms, you cannat play the numbers game, i do believe this in ma 'eart."...reminds me of childhood memories,
when Everything was as bright as the bluest skies.."

I think getting into medical school sometimes just relies on pure luck!

I think statistics plays a large part in your chances (doesn't it always). Warwick and Derby are 2 of the most established GEPs, and despite their previous stats showing that statistically they're are the easiest to get into (in terms of apps/place) year on year the increases of applications remain low and insignificant (4 years ago the apps/place at Warwik were 5:1, this year it was 5:1), so I think the therory that a flood of apps go to the less competitive unis is rubbish, and this is because there is only a relatively small pool of people who apply for medicine, and so obviously the school with the most places to offer will by it's very nature be 'easier' to get into. BTW I got offers from Warwick and Derby (2 'less' competitive unis), and rejections from Leics and Brum (2 'more' competitive unis).
