Thread: less competitive unis

There is a discussion about the application stats 4 unis in the Reapplicants 2008 thread- think its in the UCAS section of here. Some1 put up this yrs stats 4 a handful of medical schools in terms of how many applications they got. 1 uni I hav read labelled "easier" on here several times is HYMS. This year they had only abou 1000 applicants-so half got interviews. In terms if ur other qus, yes, Edinburgh doesnt interview any1 except grads or if something on ur PS isnt very clear and they need more info ( which I think is pretty unusual). UKCAT is hard 2 tell bcos a lot of unis r probs evaluating it @ the mo in terms of this yr and how it worked so u wont kno def hu requires it until the relaunch on 19th April. Out of the prospectus 4 2008 I looked through, Newcastle and HYMS are keeping it, and Birmingham still arent using it but I won't say 100% until the website is launched. I dont think many unis stipulate a minimum A* requirement offcially, but for example Edinburgh told me the majority of there apps had 3 or more As predicted at A level and at least 6A* @ GCSE. hope that helps. I'd def check out the 2008 reapps thread cos the stats r on ther if u want 2 play the numbers game.

about two collective chudding (whilst doing suprisingly li'l wurk.)
but mostly on cashews and fudgey sweets so no regrets hehe.
yet i wuld be onoured to be ya macca.
keep that extra A lvl on only if you enjoy it. Dont let them get u suckered into 'The League of Dumbasses', macca.*sigh* If only everybody could rest as easy as you with minimum grades statements. There is an all-too-common fear of the 'two equally good applicants' scenario, where GCSEs may be the only differentiating factor. It's part of the reason why I took four A-Levels, when theoretically I only needed three.
yey, the ranking is for monetary reasons. Will you get back to me later about SGUL > UCL/Imperial/Kings?
saving thirty pounds of rent per week, and not aving to commute alf an our into lectures each way every day.
fink about wat societies, and activities u mite lose from being at sgul - just a andful, provided they arent important to u. Remeber that thereis in fact no trade off between the course teaching strengf, nor will massive research facilities elp you on an undergraduate degree even remotely more than £30 a week extra in your pocket. Concentrate on the real viable benefits of imperial or ucl - wil it be close to ome to cut rent for u? Do they ave a specific degree content that attracts you to them and nowhere else?
fink about wat societies, olidays, activities and general satisfaction u culd ave wif an extra £30 and an extra hour or more of saved time and stamina in the day at sgul. £30 per week is an 'ell of a big trade-off to lose, but its also one its difficult to be aware of when you're still at 'ome, young and free. It affects your friends too -Will they appreciate u all the more for turning up to biweekly parties wif £15 of booze in tow?, or wif not even enuff money to get an 'air cut?
Once you've judged which trade off suits u best, mek your decision.Last edited by Gizmo says -; 06-04-2007 at 12:13 AM.

Sorry to hear that ankit, but I see you have an offer from st georges, congratulations!!! I'm definitely picking st g's as my firm, what about you if you get an offer from qm?
I think I might have scared B'ham into giving me an offer, because when I read on this forum that this year the grade boundaries for GCSE had risen to 7 A*'s (as opposed to the 5 I got told last summer) I sent them an extremely angry letter, stating that I thought it was unfair to change grade requirements after applications through UCAS had been completed. I also said a whole lot more, but no need to go into detail now...

Ah thanks gizmo, I think I'm gonna frame the response that Birmingham sent and hang it above my bed at st georges (that is if I get a bed, I have indeed heard some interesting stories about the Grove..), which if I may say went something like this:
(it started by saying that B'ham retains the right to change policy etc...)
'to be a successful medic at Birmingham you not only need high levels of academic potential, you also need to show commitment to your vocation, an ability to recognise your own limits .... and also respect. Respect for your fellow students, respect for your peers, respect for your patients and respect for your admissions tutor' Ooops... well at least the guy had a sense of humour
p.s. ankit, don't worry you got the better deal with georges anyway ; )Last edited by pelicans14; 06-04-2007 at 01:19 AM.

Chew Jelly Tots! You'll never look back.
I do love my extra A-Level. The thought that it might place me in better stead was, like I said, only part of the reason why I chose it. The fact that I love to read and find out what makes a good book good was a much stronger factor.
Ah... money and Imperial. Well, I live close enough to make staying at home a feasible option. And I wouldn't touch alcohol unless my life depended on it, so towing booze is a laughable image for me.
Alas, Gizmo, I already made my choice. This is the bit where you finally see the blood-encrusted face of the guy in the armchair. But I hope we can still be maccas.

Cut decisions? Eh?
Ah well. At least you'll have the money (and reason) to make me more tea."A most curious creature, Captain. Its trilling seems to have a tranquilising effect on the human nervous system. Fortunately, of course, I am... immune... to its effects..."
