Unhappy Depression

Hello,

I would like to find out about the regulations for the fitness to practice as a doctor if you have suffered from relatively long periods of depression in the past - the long periods due to the person not realising he was suffering from depression.

as long as your depression is under control now - antidepressents, congnative therapy, whatever... i see no reason why you wouldn't be able to practice.

the GMC issue guidelines on pretty much everything, google should provide them.

make sure you are open about your history, be aware of the signals when it is getting worse and get help at that point. as long as it is under control, i don't see why you should be treated any differently to a medic who has had cancer and is either in remission or has been cured.

if the depression was bad, be prepared for an uphill fight to get into medicial school, but it can be done - find some good support and go for it.
