Mnazi Mmoja Hospital, Zanzibar
Hey, anyone has been to / is going to Mnazi Mmoja Hospital at Zanzibar, Tanzania? I am going to have a medical elective over there for 1 month in April 2010. Wanna know more about your plans and experience about the hospital, accomodation, vacation before or after (safari/beach/kilimanjaro/etc.)~~

Actually i got from him a similar hazy reply too, just mentioned in an email that i can come provided with a letter of confirmation. He also mentioned he will arrange accomodation for me, for about US10/day. I have asked him several questions about the arrangments and he has replied me in a seperate email, again very briefly.
Btw theres a group in facebook called "i survived in mnazimmoja" u can find more friends who have actually been there. My email is stewartchan@gmail.com.

I'm supposed to be going there with with Work the World in Feb 2010, but I'll be going alone, my friend is going with them to Ghana instead. I haven't booked it as yet as it's going to be quite expensive after including the costs of flights to london then all the way over there etc.
I wonder if I may be cheaper doing it all seperately... is there a big admin fee if you go via this Dr Omar? I also wonder if accomodation at $10 per day would even include electricity lol (jk). I'm in no way expecting 5* luxury but I would like to be able to dry my long hair lol.
The work the world house looks ok but if I can get something similar for less £££ then I would rather stay there.
I'm predominantly going for my midwifery elective but I want to try and get a little experience in the medical/surgical side for my med personal statement, even just observational would be good.

Hi~ From what Dr. Omar told me in his email, the administration fee is $50/week and the housing fee is $10-15/person/night. Hope this helps

Wow that really is a lot cheaper, work the world are wanting £1340 for 3 weeks (not including flights) but including accomodation and food.
Whereas seperately it would come to 465 US dollars for the fees & accomodation (assuming it at $15 pppn).
Do you have any further info on the location of the accomodation/standard etc or was he quite brief about that aswell?
Thanks
x

This is from another student who has been to Mnazi Mmoja recently. I found this on the "The Elective Networks". The price he offered is also $10/night.
"We emailed anwasul@yahoo.com and he organised the placement and accommodation - the accommodation was great value for money. There is a kitchen and washing machine, a huge lounge/dining area. The rooms had fridges and Tv's in and massive 4 poster beds. There was also a shower with hot water. Food was cheap and we ate out every night/lunchtime. Our visit coincided with ramadan however there were a few restaurants open during lunchtime for tourists to eat in."
I do wish to know more about other student's accommodations, particularly about the conditions of their toilets XD
