Electives in the USA.
Hey all:
I am a medical Student studying in Pakistan and am in 3rd year. I plan to do electives in the US next year in 2008 and I have no idea how these electives work, so I was hopping if some one could help me. The following are some questions:
1. How do I apply for an elective?
2. Which University is good for an Elective, I was planning cardio?
3. What is the fee structure.
4. What are the required documents needed to get into that country.
5. Are there some sort of tests you have to do to get a admission to any US medical university, such as TOEFL or CLEP or any other medical tests.
6. Usually how long is the electives.
I do not have any other questions, I might be missing some other important information, if anyone has links or ideas please let me know.
Thanks

U.S. electives
Hi,
I'm currently a 3rd year med student. I'm planning on doing my electives in U.S. next year and was wondering if you were able to get one.
Thanks

The OP is way out of date.
The easiest way to get an elective (anywhere, really) is to get contacts via your own med school - people in the final year are a good place to start, or the Fy1s that you meet on the wards."The greater the ignorance the greater the dogmatism" (Sir William Osler)

Most of the big US medical schools have enough info on the web. Either on the main med school websites, or in the individual departments (e.g. anaesthesia etc). Look for a section called elective clerkships, elective rotations or some such, and usually it tells you there if they take foreign students, how to apply etc.
Example: http://www.hms.harvard.edu/registrar...pplication.pdf
But these are generally VERY expensive as you can see, and I've heard of people organising their own electives informally by emailing specific people at departments that they were interested in!

I did electives in Dallas and Utah and didn't have to pay. Just went through the websites to find electives and e-mailed the relevant people. This was a few years ago though.
