Organisation of your placement here in Ghana
We have full-time staff on the ground in every one of our destinations who know all of the hospitals, clinics, NGOs and our other local partners very well.
Pre-departure information
As soon as we receive your confirmation letter from the medical school or the hospital for you to come and start your elective in Ghana. We will send you an information pack containing information tailored to your coming and lots of advice on preparation. This includes comprehensive health advice on such things as immunizations, malaria prevention and what to do if you have health problems here. Approximately four weeks before you travel, when you have booked your flights, let us know ALL the flight information as soon as possible, so that we can schedule collections, stopovers and transfers.
Expert advice from our staff team here
Our staff have extensive experience living and working in the destinations where we offer placements and are always available to answer questions over the phone or by email.
Meeting on arrival
Arriving in Ghana airport late at night can be intimidating even for experienced travellers, so we make sure that one of our own staff is there waiting to meet you and provide a smooth transfer to your accommodation. If you have any problems such as lost baggage, our staffs are there to help you sort everything out.
Orientation
To get the most out of your limited time in Ghana it's important to have a really good orientation to quickly familiarize you with the local area, transport systems, prices and how to avoid being seen as a new tourist! One of our staff will spend most of your first day giving you a fast-track introduction to everything you need to know.
Accommodation (optional)
In the majority of cases, we host you for two days to let you settle and to chose your accommodation giving you plenty of freedom as well as a great social atmosphere. Because we are working in developing country, services such as running water and reliable electricity cannot be guaranteed, but we do our very best to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
For accommodation in Accra you would have three options thus, Medical School International Student Hostel, Mothers Hostel at the Hospital and Host family option.
Let me break down the cost of the accommodation when you are here.
* International student's hostel has limited accommodation for elective students at the international student's hostel during the elective times. The rate for accommodation is 300 dollars per month
* Mothers Hostel is within the hospital would cost around $ 200 for a month
* Host family, No cost for accommodation. With the host family we would allocate you to a family of good cultural background to make your stay here a very happy one. You'll have a comfortable room, shared with up to two or three other students.
* Rural placement for a week or more- No cost for accommodation. A host family, no cost for accommodation and there too we get you a family to make your stay a happy one. Where we don't get a good host family accommodations have to be paid.
When you arrive we would discuss all the options suitable for you.

Having a well-organised work elective is crucial, but it isn't the only thing that most students want from their elective or summer placement. Our elective are also about the social experience, travelling around to see Ghana, getting involved in community work and – perhaps most importantly – having fun!
Hoping to hear from you.
