Electives in Australia... a warning...

Just a warning to those of you who like me might arrange an elective in Australia without fully appreciating how bank-breakingly expensive it is...

You have to apply for a new CRB check = £35
Plus an xray = £70
Plus a medical ~ £150
= £255 before you pay any admin fees (think another £150 to 200) or flights or accommodation or anything else....

plus HIV/Hep screen

However, I was lucky and the very nice GP at BUPA said he'd do them for free if I dropped off the bloods at his normal surgery.

We had a talk where they said you should contact the hospital that you are applying to and ask them what sort of visa the recomend, you won't always need to have these things done.

The official line from the Australian Government is that medical students on elective placements need an "Occupational Trainee Visa". In reality, it doesn't happen that way since most of the hospitals aren't willing to sponsor the application.

Most of us have gone out there on tourist visas (no medical) or the short stay business visa (muchos medical expense). The tourist visa is clearly the more risky option but, if you're lucky, you can probably get away with it.

I went for the business option and had my GP take my bloods for HIV/Hep - I didn't have a full medical and paid Nuffield 65 quid for a CXR. The immigration authorities accepted that as was and that was it. My GP isn't a panel doctor so I don't know how I got away with it!

The thing is with a tourist visa, you are allowed to study in the country for upto 3 months. I emailed the admin lady at Melbourne and she told me to get a tourist visa.

If it all goes tits up in a couple of weeks, I'll plead innocence with Immigration!
